𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗗-𝟭𝟵 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲:

As of 11am 11/02; no new information. Awaiting further test results.
Late Sunday evening, NSW Health released a public health alert regarding new locations that had been visited by a new case of COVID-19 [also see update]. This is a novel situation for NSW, as the person did not test positive during HQ, however tested positive shortly after release. Although the individual was asymptomatic, they sought testing at NSW Health's request, following the implementation of day 16 testing.
Initially, NSW Health advised that [07/02]:
Investigations to date suggest the infection was likely acquired overseas and there is no indication at this stage that there was transmission in the hotel quarantine setting. [source]
Since then, NSW Health has advised [08/02]:
NSW Health is undertaking an extensive investigation into the source of a new COVID-19 case, including the possibility of transmission within a hotel quarantine facility. [source]
The case is currently classified as 'under investigation', however the Federal Government have recorded the case as locally acquired [see short video at top of Monday's post].
Quick facts:
  • Returned overseas traveller from Wollongong tested positive to COVID-19 after being released from hotel quarantine at the Sofitel Wentworth:
    • Arrived from South America on January 19
    • Returned two negative tests on day 2 [21/01] and day 12 [31/01] of HQ
    • Released from HQ on February 2
  • NSW Health contacted the person late on Thursday February 4 as part of the day 16 follow-up:
    • Individual was asymptomatic
    • Sought testing the following afternoon [5/02]
    • Notification of positive result on the night of Saturday 6 February
    • The person was contacted, interviewed by NSW Health, isolated, and re-tested, with those results re-confirming a positive detection on Sunday 7 February.
  • Has anyone else tested positive?
    • All 10 close contacts have returned negative test results.
    • All other returned travellers who stayed on the same floor in the Sofitel Wentworth during this time are being contacted by NSW Health to be tested if they have not already as part of the day-16 testing program.
Note: As part of the day 16 testing, if individuals do not show symptoms they are not required to isolate while they await the results of this test.

As of 12/02: Media release
Investigations continue into the source of infection of a returned overseas traveller from the Wollongong area who tested positive for COVID-19 after being released from hotel quarantine. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
Genomic testing results indicate this case is not related to any other cases in hotel quarantine at the same time. Further investigations are underway to determine the source of the case, including the possibility that it is an old infection from overseas.
As of 10/02: Source of Infection - Gladys Berejiklian
"That one person who was tested positive on day 17 of arriving in Australia is unlikely to have contracted it in quarantine.""So the best advice is that it's either an old infection or else the person obviously has had an unusually longer incubation period which can happen...""It is unlikely to have been acquired in quarantine, but it does show the risks that are posed and it does show the vigilance of our NSW Health team and making sure that we not only test people on days 2 and 12 but also follow them up post quarantine in certain circumstances to make sure that there aren't lingering lingering infectiousness in people who are leaving the quarantine system."
Quick facts:
