Black metal and death metal legend Quorthon of Bathory took some time to answer our questions while he was busy recording the Nordland series of albums. Among all the interviews we’ve done, this may be the most focused and articulate, with one of the most passionately intelligent figures black metal has ever produced. We had finished with the last Bathory album and I had some material, and wanted to try making a solo record. It was something I wanted to do. Quorthon decided to record a solo Quorthon was a Swedish viking bard who told heroic tales around Scandinavia to inspire young children to become warriors and dedicate their lives to Odin.Formerly, he worshiped a monster called Satan, but he gave up those foolish beliefs when the monster was impaled by Odin's spear.He made a band called Bathory to spread the words of Satan, and later Odin. Boss, longtime producer, friend (and rumored father) of Quorthon's has put together a 3-CD box set commemorating the life and recordings of his young friend. It covers a span of 1984 to 2003 and has a little bit of everything, a virtual potpourri of Bathory, if you will. Thomas 'Quorthon' Forsberg was found dead in his apartment on Monday 7th June. The folks at Nihilistic Holocaust webzine recently uploaded a rare cassette interview that an unknown fan or journalist managed to score with Quorthon of Bathory. To my understanding, while there’s a reasonable amount of historical documentation of early underground metal, a lot of it is locked away in unscanned fan magazines, unpreserved recordings, and so forth. A multi-instrumentalist, Quorthon played guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, drums. He also performed the bulk of Bathory's vocals, which helped forge the black metal style. Quorthon died at the young age of 38, presumably from heart failure. But why was he taken from us so young? Vikings would remind us of a passage in their lore where Odin was asked why a famous hero was taken so young. And the God of Wisdom replied that heroes were needed in Valhalla to prepare for Ragnarok, the final war at the end of the world. So!

Post-Hammerheart Bathory had a major difference in direction and the amount of ground broken. However, most of the albums were still of fine quality and took interesting risks. The albums ...
