Housewife highlights/Daily shit talk - December 2nd, 2020

ATLANTA
"Actress Drew Sidora is known for her performances in the Disney Channel series “That’s So Raven,” the VH1 biopic “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story” and the dance film “Step Up.”
The Olympia Fields native plays the role of wife, mother and actress in a pandemic on the new season of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” which is scheduled to premiere at 7 p.m. Sunday on the Bravo network.
Viewers meet Sidora, 37, on Season 13′s second episode, which is set to air Dec. 13. The Rich Central High School graduate, who is married to business executive Ralph Pittman, is raising three children. She has the unenviable task of joining the cast of a long-running TV show that has become the flagship of “The Real Housewives” brand, thanks to notable personalities such as NeNe Leakes (who is not slated to return for Season 13) and Kenya Moore (who is back).
Sidora’s drama seems to center around her husband’s mysterious three-day disappearance. Her mother also lives in their home. She said her father is battling Alzheimer’s disease in an Illinois nursing home. Sidora chatted with the Tribune about her time on “The Real Housewives” in a recent phone interview. The following transcript has been edited for clarity and condensed for space.
Q. What made you decide to sign up for the “Housewives?”
A. It was just one of those things. I was approached back in 2015 to join the show. I was pregnant with my now-5-year-old, and while I was in Chicago visiting family, my water broke. I was only 28 weeks, so I was actually transferred and admitted into Rush (hospital). I was there for like five weeks, ordered to bed rest and delivered Machai, 4 pounds, 4 ounces, at 32 weeks. So we kind of just stayed there, and I was like, now’s not the right time.
It just wasn’t good timing, so when they came back around, we were just moving to Atlanta. I got a chance to hang out with (former cast member) Eva Marcille and (cast member) Cynthia (Bailey) at her wine cellar opening (last year). And that’s when it was like, all right, this is awesome. And so this year, here we are. So, it was kind of God. It was like, all right, three times. Three-time charm. This was the third time, and it just felt really like perfect timing.
After everything we’ve gone through this year for 2020, it was just like, why not? Why not open myself to let people get to know the real me that I usually can’t show in any movie or TV show I would ever do? This is going to be just raw and really just introduce the world to who I am as a person.
Q. Besides Eva and Cynthia, did you know any of the other cast members before joining the show?
A. I knew Porsha (Williams). I had done an interview on Dish, so I got a chance to hang out with her. She’s my neighbor, so she literally lives six minutes away from me. That was awesome. Also Shamea (Morton), who’s a friend on the show, she was in the TLC biopic, so I had met her a few years back when we filmed that movie.
Q. Was it difficult to join a show with 12 seasons of history?
A. It’s an amazing show. I know I watched the show over the course of the years. Before we started filming, I went back to Season 1 and just really got more familiar with everything. I think it’s just awesome to see what the ladies have been able to do as far as their businesses are concerned and just really showcasing how as women we can get along. We can have fun. I’m sure you have girlfriends. You know sometimes everything’s not perfect, and you have to have those tough conversations or disagreements, or whatever. I was just excited to meet the ladies. Obviously everyone’s been super awesome and just very inviting toward me. Not that everything’s perfect — but most of them are just really enjoyable, and (I’m) just getting to know each and every one of them.
Q. When did you become a fan of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta?”
A. I would definitely say my family, they’ve been super fans, so just watching it with them. I absolutely love NeNe and wishing her well. She opened the door to this franchise, and I thought she was amazing on the show. Very, very entertaining. For me, it was just about showing myself. I’ve had three surgeries on my Achilles, and my dad has Alzheimer’s, and just what I go through. I feel like just being able to share that and open my home, hopefully to inspire somebody and just to show as an actor, this is also my life. It’s not always glitz and glamour and just show that journey of an actor that you wouldn’t get to see on any film or television show that I’ve done.
Q. A (Bravo) news release mentions some marital troubles. Can you give us some more details of what the viewers will see this season?
A. Oh, Lord. They’re going to see just us. Just the Pittmans. Obviously, my husband left for three days. I did not know where he was. That was just a thing that I thought we would never be showing to 30 million viewers, but it happened. You’re going to just see us really trying to figure this marriage thing out for the sake of our family and for what we came together and for the love that we do share. We’re just really trying to be better. We’re in counseling, so you’ll be able to see that journey as it plays out. We’re just really working hard to save our marriage.
Q. You know that being on the show is usually a marriage killer, though? There’s kind of a curse that happens to couples when they go on “The Real Housewives.”
A. I refute that though because my mom is a pastor, and we do a lot of praying in our house. I don’t think the show could make or break your marriage. I think it just would probably bring things to the forefront that you may try to ignore. And so I feel like if the marriage is supposed to work, it’s going to work whether you’re on this show or not. I really feel like for us, it’s been very instrumental in helping. I’ve had to have really tough conversations and really be vulnerable, and I think, honestly, it’s brought us closer because we’re doing the work. We’re committed to our counseling sessions. We’re committed to doing our homework and really staying together, and that’s just a decision that we’ve made. Of course we’re not going to let anything come between that, but I think being able to show that to the world — marriage is not easy; divorce is not the first thing you have to do — that’s what really (we) are most excited to share.
Q. And how much will we see of your three children this season?
A. Oh, they’re all over the place! It’s a pandemic. They’re in virtual schools. They’re in the house, literally, all the time, and so you’ll see them. We don’t have a nanny. We’re just getting settled, and we’re like schoolteachers. We’re everything. They have been a very intricate part of what you will see this season for sure.
Q. “The Real Housewives” is known for escapism, but the new season begins with the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. How do you feel about the shift in tone this season?
A. It’s going to be powerful because Black Lives Matter, that’s a big deal. And it’s something that we definitely need to keep the conversation going in, so that we can continue to do what’s right and fight for equal justice and equality and better gun laws, gun reform. And now we have a new president! I think all of that is really what we’re going through, so it’s very real. It’s very raw. I think it’s great that Bravo decided to showcase that because the world needs to see that.
Q. Now that you’re on the show, what was one thing that surprised you since you’ve been behind the scenes?
A. I was very shocked. I’m like, oh, cameras are here. I’m used to takes, multiple takes, and a director, and all of those things. And this is way different. I’m definitely able to say this is a challenge for me. This is something new, but it’s definitely exciting. What you see is what you get. It is very raw. We did not plan this stuff. It just is what it is, so that was definitely just different from what I’m used to.
Q. What other TV and film projects do you have coming up?
A. Right now I’m on “Influence,” which is an adaptation of Carl Weber’s New York Times bestselling book “Influence.” It’s streaming right now on BET and BET Plus. It stars Deborah Cox, ohmigod, so many amazing people. Kellita Smith. Amazing cast. Columbus Short. That project I’m really, really, really excited about. I also am directing my first film next year. We’re in preproduction for that right now.
Q. How has the pandemic affected your career?
A. Oh, majorly. One thing through this whole pandemic, when my checks stopped, I was like, wait a minute. I still have a family. It forced me to challenge myself to realize the importance of creating your own content, so I immediately started my production company. My husband and I started Eudora Entertainment, which is a full-fledged production company. We just got distribution through eOne. We just wrapped production of our first film. Really kudos to the pandemic because although it was difficult, although it’s been super-challenging, it really forced a lot of people to just think outside of the box.
I’ve been in front of the camera, but definitely for me, getting behind the camera is going to open up so many doors to actors that may have never had the opportunity. That’s what I’m most excited about, but the pandemic really pushed me to that. To realize, you’ve got to get out here and create your own content. Get online. Do more. Write more. I’m grateful for that because the industry, Hollywood, shut down for a really long time, and you couldn’t travel. So there were projects that I was slated to do and productions went down because they couldn’t work. I was like, OK, that’s not going to happen. I’m going to create my content and try to make sure that that never happens. I’m always able to work even through a pandemic.
Q. And what do you want the viewers to know about you as they’re watching you on the show?
A. I just want them to know Drew Sidora Pittman, the wife, the mother and the actress, and really just be gentle with me. I am not perfect, and I think that’s what you will see is that I am on a journey of really just getting back to myself. I’m rehabbing my Achilles and just really inspiring people, hopefully, to know no matter what you’re going through, you can push through anything, even during a pandemic.
Q. How often do you get back to the Chicago area?
A. Normally, if we weren’t in a pandemic, I would be home twice a month visiting my dad, visiting my family. I haven’t been there now in seven months. I’m hoping, maybe when things get safe again, I can go visit around the holidays or top of next year because I really do miss my family. I had a dream about my dad last night. I woke up in tears just really wanting to see him. I’m really hoping sooner than later I’ll be able to get out to Chicago. I love my city. I need some Garrett Popcorn right about now. I need some Harold’s Chicken, so I’m definitely going to be there very soon.
Q. Now that you have a season under your belt, do you think Chicago should have its own edition of “The Real Housewives?”
A. I would love that. We have one of the most amazing cities (and) Lake Michigan. I think the world needs a Chicago “Real Housewives” franchise ASAP."
BEVERLY HILLS
"Garcelle Beauvais' Thanksgiving wasn't exactly celebratory. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star spent the day, which also happened to be her 54th birthday, isolating due to a COVID-19 scare on the set of Housewives. ET was first to report that production on the show's 11th season was halted last week after a crew member tested positive for the coronavirus.
"We shot for Housewives on Tuesday, Tuesday night we got home and found out that a few people in our crew tested positive for COVID," Garcelle confesses in ET's first look at this Tuesday's episode of The Real. Garcelle says she and her castmates all have to quarantine for 14 days, and her 13-year-old twin sons, Jaid and Jax, are temporarily staying with their father, Garcelle's ex-husband, Mike Nilon.
"We do all the protocols," Garcelle tells her Real co-hosts. "We get tested at least three times a week. We get tested before we shoot. You know, my kids get tested, I get tested, anybody who's in my household, and you know, we did the right things, but at the same time, it just shows you that this virus -- you can touch something, you can… you know, it's not necessarily just from people."
"Hopefully everybody will be healthy, and we're down for a few weeks, but then we'll be back to work," she adds. "But luckily for me, we do The Real from home, so I can still do this job, which I’m thankful for."
Garcelle says she has no symptoms, has had multiple negative coronavirus tests and continues to be tested multiple times a week amid her quarantine.
Season 11 of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills will feature Garcelle alongside Lisa Rinna, Kyle Richards, Dorit Kemsley, Erika Jayne, Sutton Stracke, as well as new 'Wife Crystal Kung Minkoff and new "friend of" Kathy Hilton. It’s slated to premiere in 2021."
JERSEY (UK)
"One is the mother of a pop singer best known for failing to impress the judges on the The X Factor.
Another has rubbed shoulders with Donald Trump, while a third is a 57-year-old thrill-seeker.
They are among seven glamorous and successful women aiming to put Jersey back in the TV spotlight in a new reality show.
The Channel Island's first small screen claim to fame came in the Seventies with Enemy At The Door, about wartime life under Nazi occupation.
But perhaps Jersey is still best known to many viewers as the setting for Eighties detective drama Bergerac, starring John Nettles as unorthodox ex-cop Jim Bergerac.
Now The Real Housewives Of Jersey hope to show viewers a different side of island life.
The ITV reality series aims to portray everything from its picturesque tranquil beaches to the glitzy party scene.
And yesterday the cast of the show, which will begin airing at the end of the month on ITVBe, was unveiled.
Tessa Hartmann, mother of British singer and X Factor contestant Tallia Storm, will be joined by businesswoman Ashley Cairney and natural medicine guru Hedi Green.
Fashionista Jane Rayner, socialite Kate Taylor, model Mia Ledbury and estate agent Margaret Thompson round off the cast.
A short trailer gives a glimpse into the women's lifestyles as they are seen swimming in a luxurious outdoor infinity pool, getting off a private jet and, of course, sipping champagne.
ITV says the ten-part series 'will follow the highs and lows of our marvellous Housewives and their families who all live life to the full on the island while bringing fun, laughter, tears and of course, plenty of glamour'.
It is the second UK version of The Real Housewives franchise – there are more than a dozen covering various parts of the US but the only British location until now has been the award-winning The Real Housewives Of Cheshire.
Executive producer Mike Swindells said: 'Having spent an incredible summer embracing all that the beautiful island of Jersey offers, we can't wait to introduce the world to this magnificent location and our raft of exceptional new Housewives.
'As viewers would expect, the lives of The Real Housewives of Jersey are as complicated as ever.'
The entire series will be available to watch on the ITV Hub on the same day it launches on ITVBe, in the week after Christmas. Here we profile the programme's seven stars.
She may be a 57-year-old mother of three daughters but that doesn't stop Hedi Green skydiving, motorbike riding and paddleboarding.
The 'warrior of life' has lived in Jersey for 35 years. A practitioner of natural medicine who believes in the energy of earth and healing, she has three clinics.
Originally from the Midlands, Jane Rayner, 56, has been living in Jersey for five years. The fashionista is twice divorced and currently engaged – so hoping it'll be third time lucky.
Sir David Attenborough is one of her heroes and she is keen to do her bit to protect the environment.
At 58, Margaret Thompson is the oldest Housewife. She moved to the island when she was 18 and has worked her way up from pot washer to the self-styled 'Queen of Jersey property'.
Originally from Scotland, Miss Thompson was pictured rubbing shoulders with Donald Trump at a New Year party in 2016. Her dogs have their own following on Instagram.
Kate Taylor, 51, has lived on the island for 30 years and has become well known on the Jersey social scene for her gregarious character and extravagant outfits.
She is an ambassador for a number of charities and is into yoga and wellness.
Tessa Hartmann, 50, is the mother of singer Tallia Storm.
She is originally from Scotland and moved to Jersey five years ago with her husband, composer and film director Sascha Hartmann.
The couple began their PR agency Hartmann Media in 1996 and she has represented designers including Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren.
Former model Mia Ledbury, 44, originally from Australia, moved to Jersey only five years ago with her husband Dan and their two daughters.
She is beginning to dip her toe back into the modelling world after taking a break to have children.
Ashley Cairney, at 31 the youngest Housewife, is the only Jersey-born girl on the show and a self-made businesswoman.
She is married to Ben, her high school sweetheart whom she has been with since the age of 17, and the couple have two young children.
They each run their own business on the island."
NEW JERSEY
ORANGE COUNTY
In a series of November 30 Instagram Stories, Jo revealed, “We are doing the thing that all new couples should do when they first start dating.”
“Maybe not when they first start dating,” Taran chimed in.
“OK, and we are doing the thing that all couples should do before getting engaged one day,” Jo clarified. “Take a long road trip together. So we are off to San Francisco, which is about a good eight hours away. But knowing all of the stops we’re going to do, it will be 11.”
Jo previously introduced Taran to her Instagram followers and podcast listeners. In an October 3 post in celebration of National Boyfriend Day, Jo shared a selfie of the two with a heartfelt caption.
“My whole heart and soul. If you’ve been listening to PopCandy for the last few months now, you’ve been hearing me gush about ‘Broadway Boy’ and sharing our crazy story about meeting in the middle of COVID. Happy to finally show you the handsome face behind the name and why my heart has felt so full these days,” Jo wrote. “@tarangraymusic thank you for being a light and a gift in my life.”
Taran commented on Jo’s sweet post to add, “I love you baby girl. I wouldn’t want to battle this year the way we have with anyone else.”
In a later Instagram post, Jo revealed that the pair met virtually and kept in contact for a bit before meeting in person.
“Found this pic of our first time ever meeting after 3 months of COVID dating over a screen! Can you tell how excited we were to finally meet in real life?” Jo wrote. “I think I’ll keep him!”
Jo even shared a little dating advice with a follower who commented on the post, “I might actually try again if I could find a sweetheart like you. I haven’t dated for 10 years.” Jo shared the secret to her romantic success, writing in response, “Try Hinge. That’s where we met and I think the best pool of quality people who are looking for love there, but that was just my experience having tried all the major dating apps.”
POTOMAC
"In the November 29 episode of The Real Housewives of Potomac, we got a glimpse at the newest addition to Karen Huger’s House of La’Dame and one of her "best projects to date," La'Dame by Karen Huger X RPGShow. Karen teamed up with her hairstylist, Steven Thomas (also known as "The Hair Doc") and launched an exclusive wig line, which she introduced to the rest of the ‘Wives during her “Wig Shift” party.
We recently caught up with Karen and Steven and got all the tea on how this "bold and sexy" wig line came to be. Read on to learn how these two create their hair magic.
What inspired you two to launch a wig line and what has that process been like?
Karen Huger: I have worn wigs for quite some time. I had that wig shift on national TV and that was my aha moment. So, I had been looking to develop my own wig line — one that fit and feels wonderful. When RPGShow presented the opportunity to work together to create the collaboration, I knew I wanted Steven to be by my side as the creative director. He is a genius hairstylist!
Steven Thomas: Creating this wig line with Karen is one of my best projects to date. It's gratifying and has allowed myself and Karen to get closer and bond. Karen gives me freedom to fly creatively with her guidance, which is the ultimate reason why I love being a part of her glam team!
How did you start working together?
KH: A few years ago I was looking for a new hairstylist and I heard about Steven. As you know your hairstylist is someone who you spend quality time with. Once we met, it was pure magic.
What is your work dynamic like when creating hairstyles?
KH: There are just some people in your life with whom you gel effortlessly. When I find a look I want, I discuss it with Steven and he styles my wigs with that goal in mind — with a bit of Hair Doc extra.
Do you ever disagree on what looks good?
KH: We work together and feed off of each other to get to what I envisioned... then we end up elevating the look!
Has Karen's style changed at all since working with Steven?
KH: My style has evolved. I always have my classic look, now just with a modern twist.
How do you choose the wig looks you're going to create?
KH: I think about what women want and what women need to help empower themselves to be the best they can be. If there is one thing I know, it’s that if you’re having a great hair day, nothing can stop you.
Explain the meaning behind your wigs' different names.
KH: Each of the wigs in my bold and sexy line has her own personality/mood. Victoria, for example, she's a queen. She goes from boardroom meetings to a night out with her friends. She’s powerful, intelligent, sultry, elegant, and versatile. When you wear one of the wigs from my collection you'll know the Grande Dame is by your side.
What do you have planned next for your La’Dame empire?
KH: La'Dame is not only beauty... beauty is only the beginning. I am so excited as we continue to grow. The sky's the limit!"

Covid-19 update Tuesday March 17th

Good morning from the UK. Happy St Patricks day. It'll be a woeful one for many Irish people around the world with pubs and bars shut in multiple US states, several European countries, several Asian countries and worst of all, Ireland itself. Here in the UK you can still go to the pub, although as of late yesterday afternoon the UK government advised against it says the BBC.

Virus statistics
Several comments from redditors in past days complained the WHO stats I C&P'd did not come very close to reflecting stats being quoted by national media wherever they lived. As a result, I'm abandoning the WHO stats and going back to the John Hopkins University tracker stats for all countries. If it's good enough for the likes of Forbes, Business Insider, FT, USA Today to regularly cite it then it's good enough for me:-

Region Today (John Hopkins Stats at time of writing) Yesterday (John Hopkins stats not the WHO's) % daily change
Global 182,424 169,387 +7.7%
China 81,053 81,020 +0.4%
Italy 27,980 24,747 +13.1%
Iran 14,991 13,938 +7.6%
Spain 9,942 7,844 +26.7%
South Korea 8,320 8,162 +1.9%
Germany 7,272 5,813 +25.1%
France 6,655 5,437 +22.4%
USA 4,661 3,774 +23.5%
Switzerland 2,330 2,200 +5.9%
UK 1,553 1,395 +11.3%
Netherlands 1,414 1,136 +24.5%
Norway 1,347 1,256 +7.2%
Sweden 1,121 1,032 +8.6%
Belgium 1,058 886 +19.4%
Austria 1,018 860 18.4%

All other countries with under 1000 identified infections not listed (sorry Denmark), yesterday's threshold was 750. Total countries infected worldwide = 155, an increase from yesterday of 9. Source for all countries (as discussed above): the John Hopkins University dashboard (Link). (Personal note: Western countries infection counts are increasing each day much faster than Asian countries but that may be due to cultural differences or it may be that they're doing my testing, if anyone can shed light on this please do).
Reminder, these are identified case counts and medical experts are reporting this virus has a long incubation period with people being infections despite displaying no symptoms; the true infection figures are likely to be much higher. Note that some countries are reporting shortages of test kits which further skews the data available; assume true cases are much higher.
Finally, no, I don't believe China's official statistics either.

Selected Virus news

Warnings of shortages of regeants (ingredients) to make test kits in the US - the Fool (a high quality finance website despite the name) reports that FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn stated last week in testimony before a U.S. House of Representatives appropriations subcommittee that there could be supply chain issues with reagents needed for novel coronavirus diagnostic kits. He noted that the supply issues specifically apply to RNA used in testing for coronavirus disease COVID-19.

Shortages in US supermarkets likely to continue until panic buying eases - The LA Times says that shortages will continue until people calm down in their shopping habits. The major chains usually get shipments overnight, or perhaps twice a day, to restock essentials such as paper towels, toilet paper and water, but “manufacturers in some cases are having trouble keeping up, and that’s where the void is, they’re not able to keep up with demand,” said Bob Reeves, vice president for the West at the Shelby Report, a research firm that tracks the grocery industry. “We’re seeing shipments coming into the stores sometimes without any of those products, and it will be like that until people calm down a little bit,” he said. In some cases, chains are sending their delivery trucks directly to manufacturers — bypassing warehouses and distributors — to get the items to the stores faster. (Personal note: the same applies for all supermarket supply chains globally)

Pa. hospitals are rationing protective gear as the number of coronavirus cases grows - (Personal note, this is an example, there seems to be a general global shortage of medical PPE (personal protective equipment) - The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that hospitals across Pennsylvania are drastically limiting the use of key protective gear out of fears that a dramatic increase in coronavirus cases could diminish reserves and cause a dangerous shortage. The rationing comes as the state Department of Health maintains that it has personal protective equipment available and is working with health systems to make sure they have what they need. The gear includes eye protection, gowns, and N95 respirators, which are essential in preventing a health care worker from breathing in infectious particles when in close contact with someone who has COVID-19. In Philadelphia, two doctors who work at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania said it’s barring the use of N95 respirators “except in extraordinarily limited situations.” Penn Medicine declined to comment. Another city doctor, Daphne Owen, said in a tweet Thursday her clinic “for uninsured and undocumented patients” was out of masks. Two days later, the clinic, Puentes de Salud, said it was closed due to the pandemic.

Other Virus news in brief
- The Scottish courts and tribunals announced today that no new criminal jury trials would be commenced or new juries empanelled until further notice.
- Iran has temporarily freed a total of 85,000 prisoners, including political prisoners, a spokesman for its judiciary said on Tuesday, adding that the prisons were responding to the threat of a coronavirus epidemic in jails.
- Britain had “no time to lose” in changing tactics in order to prevent thousands of deaths and the NHS being overwhelmed, scientists providing guidance to the UK government have said. The Imperial College Covid-19 response team – which is one of several scientific teams advising UK ministers – published a paper (I've put it in the addendum below) showing that 250,000 people could die if efforts were focused only on delaying and slowing down the spread of Covid-19.Separately, England’s deputy chief medical officer, Prof Jonathan Van-Tam, could not rule out the strict measures having to last for a year but predicted they would last at least “several months“.
- Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs has advised Australians to return home as soon as possible by commercial means because overseas travel is becoming “more complex and difficult” as countries impose travel restrictions and close their borders.
- Leaders of EU states were expected on Tuesday to suspend all travel into the passport-free Schengen zone by non-EU nationals for at least 30 days in a bid to instil uniformity across the bloc after some member states, including Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland, unilaterally began imposing border checks.
- China has issued an angry reaction (by diplomatic standards) to the US president Donald Trump’s characterisation of the disease as “the Chinese virus.” (he tweeted late last night "The United States will be powerfully supporting those industries, like Airlines and others, that are particularly affected by the Chinese Virus. We will be stronger than ever before!"). China’s foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said the US president should take care of his own matters first and not seek to “stigmatise” China.
- The postponement of soccer’s Euro 2020 Championship may already have been decided after Uefa last week cancelled its hotel bookings in Copenhagen.
- The UK just advised its citizens against all non essential travel worldwide in the past 10 minutes
- Mobile phone networks are struggling in some areas of the UK with significantly increased demands according to down detector. For sure a lot of people seem to be home working, my commute in this morning was like it was the middle of August and everyone else was on holiday.
- Alitalia, the Italian airline flag carrier is to be renationalised by Italy
- Cinema chains are closing in multiple countries due to shutdowns
- Kazakhstan is closing down its two largest cities (despite only having 32 cases so far)
- A preliminary calculation by a US expert suggests that tens of thousands of premature deaths from air pollution may have been avoided by the cleaner air in China, far higher than the 3,208 coronavirus deaths.
- Jordan: the army has said it will deploy at entrances and exits of main cities in the kingdom in a move officials said was ahead of an imminent announcement of a state of emergency to combat the spread of coronavirus.
- In a joint statement, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Reddit and YouTube said they would help ensure people could stay connected to each other during isolation as well as fight any misinformation and fraud linked to the outbreak. “We are working closely together on Covid-19 response efforts,” the statement said. “We’re helping millions of people stay connected while also jointly combating fraud and misinformation about the virus, elevating authoritative content on our platforms, and sharing critical updates in co-ordination with government healthcare agencies around the world.
- Almost all Germans shops are about to close by government decree; supermarkets, pharmacies will remain open (including on Sundays when they are usually closed). Separately, government press briefings there have gone online only.
- Olympic organisers in Japan are asking people not to create crowds along the route of the Olympic torch relay and not to gather near the route if they feel sick. A Boeing aircraft flew to Greece on 15 March to bring the torch to Japan.
- France: No movement allowed except for essential work or health reasons. “There can be no more outside meetings, no more seeing family or friends on the street or in the park. We must slow the spread of this virus by limiting the number of people we are in contact with each day to the strict minimum. If we do not, we endanger the lives of those we hold dear.” said the French President Macron.
- Israel’s government has approved emergency measures to track people suspected or confirmed to have been infected with the coronavirus by monitoring their mobile phones, immediately raising privacy concerns in the country. The cabinet unanimously approved the use of the technology, developed initially for counter-terrorism purposes, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The Association for Civil Rights in Israel said providing the country’s internal security agency, the Shin Bet, with new secretive powers was a “dangerous precedent and a slippery slope that must be approached and resolved after much debate and not after a brief discussion”.
- Indonesian president Joko Widodo said on Saturday that he had withheld some information about cases to prevent the country from panicking, the Jakarta Post reported. He has rejected calls for a lockdown to be imposed on hard hit areas.
- Malaysia has announced it's closing its borders prompting neighbouring Singapore's citizens to panic buy (90% of their food is imported from Malaysia).
- New Zealand on Tuesday deported its first unruly traveller flouting the country’s mandatory 14-day self-isolation rule for almost all arrivals, the health ministry said. The tourist, who had checked into a backpackers hostel in the city of Christchurch, was removed from the accommodation by the police after officials learned she did not have clear self-isolation plans.

Economics

Goldman Sachs doesn't think the stock market drops have finished - BusinessInsider says that Goldman Sachs thinks that the S&P 500 might plunge as low as 2,000 before recovering through the rest of the year, the investment bank wrote Friday. The level is the benchmark index's lowest since early 2016 and implies a 20% decline from Monday's open. Such a tumble would also place the index more than 40% below its February 19 peak. The coronavirus outbreak is responsible for "unprecedented financial and societal disruption," the analysts said, and equities have so far served as accurate leading indicators before the release of relevant earnings or macroeconomic data. That said, the analysts pointed out that "The lesson of prior event-driven bear markets is that financial devastation ultimately allows a new bull market to be born,".

U.S. factories are likely to close because of the coronavirus’ supply-chain shock - Marketwatch reports (link) that there is a very real chance that companies from auto makers to electronics manufacturers will soon begin to cease or limit production. With a downed China as the headstream of global manufacturing, mercantile America simply can’t function as it’s accustomed to. We’re starting to see this happen in official reports: The New York Fed’s Empire State business conditions index, released Monday, plunged by a record 34.4 points to minus 21.5 in March. And Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said Sunday he expects a contraction in GDP in the second quarter. (Personal note: I expect similar problems across all G20 countries). The article goes on to explain that many supply chain directors may understand their first tier suppliers but often do not have full visibility of the status of their 2nd or 3rd tier suppliers

Supply impact of the coronavirus outbreak is waning, but demand shock will linger, economist says - CNBC says that in January and February, industrial output fell by 13.5% from the same period a year earlier, the weakest reading since January 1990 — when Reuters' record began. China's industrial production is likely to improve in March over a slump in January and February due to the coronavirus outbreak, but consumer demand will take longer to recover both in the country and globally, an economist said Monday. "We will see some recovery, but this recovery, I think, is being undermined by the global spread as well," said Bo Zhuang, chief China economist at TS Lombard. Meanwhile, retail sales in January and February shrank 20.5% from a year ago, compared with a 8% growth in December as fearful consumers avoided crowded places like malls, restaurants and cinemas. "We were worried about supply-side issues, but now it's becoming a demand shock issue," said Zhuang. Smaller outfits like restaurants and service-oriented businesses have "resumed work but there are no customers," said Zhuang. "I think we are going to see a delayed V-shape (recovery), and this V may be a tilted V or W, or even U. We are not sure," he added.

Coronavirus Impacts Every Sector of the Supply Chain - Supply and demand chain executive reports that the global supply chain continues to experience disruption. "We have seen that in the way that it’s spreading across into different hubs where we see alternative routes to be overly burdened, such as the rail system,” says Koray Köse of Gartner. “Now with the crisis and the hubs being closed and product movements are still active to some extent, but not necessarily from those regions, will become crowded and impacted. This means that there’s an additional strain on the overall network to move material.” Some products have experienced significant upticks including Chicken noodle soup (+37%), Hand sanitizer (+65%), Disinfecting Wipes: (+353%) and Cold & Flu medications (+197%) amongst others.

Coronavirus pandemic worse than 1997 financial crisis, Malaysian ex-PM Mahathir warns - The Strait times reports on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the former premier who steered Malaysia's recovery from the 1997 Asian financial crisis, expects the current coronavirus pandemic to hit the global economy even harder. "This is worse than the financial crisis," he said in a Bloomberg Television interview. "This is really a terrible blow to the economies of the whole world." Dr Mahathir joins other world leaders in warning that the virus impact may be worse than past periods of upheaval (Personal note: I pointed out yesterday the NZ PM also saying this).

Supply chain news relating to Covid-19

For Global Supply Chains the Worst Is Yet to Come - Supply Chain Management review says (Link) that most industrial companies have 30-60 days of parts and raw materials either on hand, in-transit, or obtainable on short notice. After these supplies run out, we will start to see shortages of finished products as well as parts needed to produce other goods. Shortages will start to become more evident toward the end of March and beginning of April. Production in some non-Chinese factories will have to be put on hold for lack of parts. Partially finished products will remain in suspension until all parts are available to build finished products. Some companies are pressing their engineers to redesign parts that can be sourced in the U.S., or at least outside of China. Other companies are giving 3D printing a serious try for the first time. The article goes on to point out delays in sea freight ex-Asia and extremely high airfreighting costs are exacerbating the situation.

U.S. Suspends Truck-Driving Limits to Speed Coronavirus Shipments - The Wall Street Journal reports as of 2 days ago that maximum working hours for truck drivers in the US have been suspended. This applies to truck drivers moving emergency supplies such as medical equipment, hand sanitizer and food in response to the nationwide coronavirus outbreak. It comes as hospitals report shortages of medical masks and as retailers and manufacturers are straining under surging demand for everything from hand sanitizer to staples such as toilet paper and rice. As anxious consumers stockpile goods, grocers have turned to rationing, imposing purchase limits on disinfectant wipes, cleaning supplies and other high-demand products. The move is the first time the FMCSA has issued nationwide-wide relief from hours-of-service regulations, although regional declarations have waived those rules in response to disasters such as hurricanes. Federal regulations limit most commercial truck drivers to 11 hours of driving time in a 14-hour workday, restrictions intended to reduce accidents caused by highway fatigue.

For supply chain companies, U.S.-Mexico border closures could be catastrophic - Marketplace points out that Mexico’s deputy health minister says he’s worried about people coming into Mexico from the United States; currently the U.S. has far more cases of COVID-19 than Mexico. The Mexican government even said it might consider restricting access at its northern borders. For businesses that operate on both sides of the border, any shutdown could be catastrophic. The article gives a case study of a manfacturer employing 150 people in Texas. The company president says before anyone considers closing the border, President Donald Trump and Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, should discuss a coordinated response to the virus. As for now, he says all of his people can work from home, if the situation calls for it. Everyone here has a laptop, he said. But he says the independent truck drivers and contractors who work on the loading docks, they have to be on site to run things. Those people also only get paid if they show up for work. So, for now, they’re glad the COVID-19 hasn’t shut this part of Texas down, yet.

It won't be long before Coronavirus shuts down local African supply chains - The major Kenyan newspaper daily nation reports that there are imminent difficulties facing Kenyan pharma firms due to the industry importing 70% of its ingredients from India and China, both of whom have restricted exports. Studies show that the Kenyan pharmaceuticals market is worth Sh100 billion ($965m USD), 80 per cent of which is prescription drugs. Although Kenya exports 50 per cent to the COMESA region and 75 per cent to East African Community, most of these exports are re-exports from India and China.

European automotive factories shutting down - Ferrari and Lamborghini have both suspended almost all production (says the Express and Star) whilst Yahoo Finance reports that Fiat Chrysler said in a statement on Monday 16 March that it would halt operations at most of its European plants, from now until 27 March because of an “interruption in market demand.” The Italian-American automotive group said the manufacturing stop includes six factories in Italy, the EU country worst hit by coronavirus. Italy has had over 24,700 infection cases so far, and more than 1,800 people have died from the virus. The PSA group, which includes Peugeot, Citroen, and Opel, said today it will close all its European plants, including in the UK, France and Germany for the remainder of the month too. German car giant Volkswagen is also suspending production at a number of manufacturing bases in Europe, including in Slovakia and Spain. VW-owned Seat has shuttered its main factory near Barcelona for at least the rest of the month. Meanwhile, according to the Financial Times, Volkswagen may also be forced to curtail production at the main factory in its home town of Wolfsburg, because of running low on parts.

Good news section
Amazon to hire 100,000 more workers and give raises to current staff to deal with coronavirus demands - CNBC says that Amazon is hiring an additional 100,000 employees in the U.S. to meet the surge in demand from online shopping amid the coronavirus outbreak, the company said Monday. The company is looking to add extra full-time and part-time positions for warehouse and delivery workers. Through the end of April, it will raise pay for these employees by $2 per hour in the U.S., £2 per hour in the UK, and approximately €2 per hour in many EU countries. Amazon currently pays $15 per hour or more in some areas of the U.S. for warehouse and delivery jobs. Amazon encouraged employees in other industries whose jobs were "lost or furloughed" as a result of the coronavirus to apply, including members of the hospitality, restaurant and travel industries. "We want those people to know we welcome them on our teams until things return to normal and their past employer is able to bring them back," the company added.

Educating in denial older relatives anecdote
Personal story time; my 69 year old Aunt is very grumpy because despite me telling her for well over a month, it is finally dawning on her that her dream guided coach bus tour of the West USA national parks in 10 weeks time is rapidly going up in smoke whilst my 75 year old Dad has realised his third cruise of the year (this time around the med) in 5 weeks time is also about to be toast. My Aunt complained on Facebook yesterday that nobody is mentioning the 46,000 people who have recovered from the illness and that "it's just a bit of flu". It isn't, otherwise governments around the world would not be reacting as they are.
If you have an elderly relative like mine who relies far too much on social media anecdotes rather than good quality fact based mainstream media, maybe point them at this businessinsider article here where it points out that 1) flu mortality rates are 0.1% vs. Covid-19 is 3.4% and 2) for 70-79 the mortality rate is 8% and for over 80's it's 14.8%. Hopefully they might just realise the seriousness of the situation; my Aunt dismissed it as "a website I've never heard of and won't believe" despite the article clearly citing CDC figures.

[IWantOut] 23M Civil Engineer Kenya -> New Zealand/Canada

Hi. I know this is likely a longshot but I'm hoping to see if anyone else from Kenya has had a successful story about emigrating to NZ or Canada which are my current picks. I am currently set to finish my undergrad in South Africa in Civ Eng at the end of this year and was looking at possible opportunities for finding work in one of these countries. My biggest issue is that I'll be fresh off the boat with basically no experience. From what I've seen in SA, finding work as an international will be almost impossible even with a degree from here since even companies that have internships only want citizens to apply (which is understandable obviously).
With regards to visas, I don't see a way in with Canada given the LMIA (still looking though). for NZ, using the online tool to check my points for the "Skilled Migrant" Category Visa, I found that I may have just enough points (170) to meet the minimum requirement (160) given the skills shortage and what my level of qualification will be BUT, it ALL relies on me finding a suitable job in NZ (outside of Auckland especially). Also as a side note, the "working holiday visa" doesn't apply to Kenya (or any African country I believe) :(
I have also considered the possibility of carrying on with post-grad studies in one of these places and then trying out the post-study visa route but NZ is definitely too expensive for me as an International student in that regard and I would be relying on university funding to be able to study further in Canada (which I may have found one uni for... but seems fickle). So assuming I can't afford to study there, my best bet would be to try and secure a job offer so that I can apply for the visa (in NZ)...
So I guess my main question is has anyone from Kenya or another African country been in a similar position as me with regards to work experience and being fresh out of university? Is any of this even possible without sufficient work experience?
I'd love to hear some of your stories and/or any advice you have. Cheers.
Edit: Also, if you know of any other countries that you think I should look into, I'm all ears :)

Andrea Moss from Melbourne appreciation post

A tribute to one-season wonder Andrea Moss from Toorak, “the Beverly Hills of Melbourne,” one of the meanest women I have ever seen on housewives. Here are my “favourite” Andrea moments:
Three side notes re: Melbourne season 1 rewatch: 1) The blatant racism and cultural appropriation never gets any less shocking. 2) The pooch party was one of my favourite things to ever happen on housewives. 3) And, to end on a happy note, I will never, ever, ever tire of watching Gina totter up to Andrea’s tennis court (two hours late, no less) on her hot pink hooker heels and utterly fuck it up with them as long as I live. “Who wants to watch five bloated women running around a tennis court? I don’t.” - Gina “I deal in fact” Liano.
Bonus Gina quote: “ it was the first time I was aware that there was something wrong between Janet and I, but it wasn’t the first time I was aware there was something wrong with Janet.”

How I Get Interviews for Jobs I’m Underqualified For The other day I was using this Google Search trick to look for full time remote jobs. I’m a content marketing manager so part of my Google search contained “content marketing.” However, the first search result was for a growth marketing position—something I am probably not qualified for. The job listing appeared because one of the qualifications in the job description was having an understanding of content marketing principles. I checked that box but couldn’t do the same for the other qualifications. They required the applicant to have experience with lifecycle marketing, email campaigns, and push notification campaigns. This is so not me, but after seeing how cool the company was I convinced myself that it could be. So I added two custom sentences to the beginning of my cover letter template, uploaded my resume, linked to my portfolio site, answered a few short questions, and submitted my application.
Pyn, an Australian startup with close ties to Atlassian, wants to make working from home less exhausting Pyn was cofounded by Joris Luijke, a former head of HR at Atlassian. With Pyn, Luijke wants to improve the work-from-home experience that people all over the world are suddenly struggling with. As employees at home lean harder on programs like Slack, Zoom and Gmail to get things done, the output of notifications and tasks from each product can stack up into a pile of indistinguishable noise. Pyn's program makes the disparate systems used by the WFH world "talk" to each other, cutting down the amount of notifications received by workers to relevant, personalized messages.

American Tourists Banned in Bahamas After Latest U.S. Coronavirus Numbers It's been almost three weeks since the islands of the Bahamas reopened its borders to international visitors. On Sunday, the island nation shut off visitors from the United States because of COVID-19. In a national address on Sunday, Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said that all airports and seaports—to and from the neighboring U.S.—will be shut off as of Wednesday. Americans on the islands will be permitted to leave after Wednesday under special accommodations. "Regrettably, the situation here at home has already deteriorated since we began the reopening of our domestic economy," said Minnis, who is also the acting health minister until further notice. "It has deteriorated at an exponential rate since we reopened our international borders."
14 work-from-home jobs that pay up to six figures—and how to get them As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, more than 1.4 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits for the week ending July 18, marking the 18th consecutive week initial jobless claims topped one million. With a large share of eligible workers looking for employment, job searching platform FlexJobs combed through its database to identify 14 high-paying positions that are full-time and fully remote. While each of these roles requires a different level of experience and skills, they all have one main benefit in common: the potential to pay employees $100,000 or more annually.
Discussions
Should a remote employee’s salary be tied to their physical location? This debate has come up at my place of work recently: Should the area where someone lives impact their salary if they are working as a remote employee? Should someone be paid less if they move to an area with a lower cost of living, even if they started in an area where they were making a higher salary?
Favorite remote work real time collaboration tool(s)? I'm about to start a large highly complex and creative project with a strong team. Unfortunately, with distancing in place, we can't spend all day in a room with a whiteboard. I imagine others have faced this dilemma. What are your favorite tools (or features if within common telecom SW like MS Teams/Zoom) for real time, day-long remote ideation and collaborative design?
Books that you loved as a digital nomad The book need not be about the digital nomad life specifically. I'm looking for books that are about adventures, being free, exploration, challenging the status quo, living life without making money the primary motivator and source of meaning, etc. You get the vibe. I'm guessing this kind of personality// philosophy can be ascribed to most of the digital nomads, so I'm asking you, does any book come to your mind when you think of these? I'm open to both fiction and non-fiction.

I made huge mistakes when I started out and I wish I knew these things earlier. Most of you are probably better than me when it comes to the whole business process, so I bet most of you don't have as many problems as I did. Here are the top things I wish I did right at the start. If back then I knew what I know now, life would be much easier. If you are just starting out, you don't want to miss this.

A conversation between Sharon Needles and Larry Flick

Last year Sharon Needles gave a rare recorded interview to Larry Flick on SiriusXM. I thought it was really interesting and gave a fascinating glimpse into her thoughts and perceptions and the kind of person she is. Larry Flick is also really good and has some great insights. So upon stumbling upon that recording again lately, I though it would be nice to transcribe it to the best of my ability for others who may have missed it or prefer reading to listening.
Hope you like it too.
****************************************
So here’s the thing I love about Sharon Needles - the bitch is on time! She was actually 15 minutes early! What’s that all about?
You know, I’m a cross dressing alcoholic, seven years in the industry, and though I have many ups and many many many downs - there’s one thing I can say for sure and that is I am never late! I don’t do late.
You don’t do late. You know it’s very cool, we’ve talked so many times and you really are, you’re always a little early! And I live for that.
Well, I don’t do a lot of radio press. I have the face for radio - but I keep my press kind of limited now. I kind of ran the gamut of of doing every single press opportunity that I could when I first started, and it’s kind of a fruitless waste of my time. But for you Miss Mary Flick I wouldn’t have missed it!
I appreciate that. When I heard you were in town I was like, she’s gotta come up and see me.
I was telling one of the people who works here at SiriusXM, I said what do you think of Miss Mary Flick and they said "it’s our favorite person in the entire building", and I couldn’t agree with them more. You’re one of my favorite people to come and talk to.
And you’re one of my favorite people in the world.
You gotta get out more!
No, you are absolutely one of my favorite people in the world. Sharon Needles is joining us on SiriusXM, I’m Larry Flick. She has always got a lot going on, she got an album called Battle Axe, you need to see the videos for the song Battle Axe and for one of my personal favorite songs on the record Andy Warhol is Dead, and for the new single 666 which we’re gonna talk about in a minute, but also she’s got her… This is the Sharon Needles time of year - Halloween! And you’re doing a show.
I mean, a little advice to anyone who gets the opportunity to win a pop phenomenon reality television show - don’t end it by saying your favorite day of the year.
It will follow you forever.
Yes, Halloween went from my favorite day of the year to its own small empire, and what was once watching the leaves change and the weather get cooler and preparing to wow them with your Halloween costume, has now become the most stressful time of year for me for the last seven years.
I mean, do you even do a costume for Halloween? You’re working!
I do do Halloween costumes every year, which I kind of screwed myself on that because you’ve got to out-do yourself every single year. You always want to make sure that you’re topping yourself, which most drag queens do - they top themselves every night because they have duct taped their own dick into their ass, but it gets harder and harder every single year to find new ways to wow them visually. Now if I was smart I would’ve taken the Elvira direction, where your walk-in closet contains one dress and then you just use yourself as the treat on Halloween. But you know, as an artist and as a drag queen I still get off on constantly changing, reinventing, not just trying to wow my audiences but trying to wow myself.
Are you sharing what your costume is or is it a big secret?
I do about four costumes a year for the Halloween season, so I guess I could share one. We are re-creating the Mechanical Animals album cover of Marilyn Manson with the androgynous genitalia and the breasts, so I’m very excited about that one. I would’ve never considered that album to be something that’s nostalgic, but that’s just the way age works Miss Mary Flick. I can’t believe that my young fans tell me about how their parents listened to that record, when that was the record that inspired me more than any other record growing up.
Welcome to my life, Sharon. So you’ve got this new show you’re doing at the Laurie Beechman.
The third annual Sharon Needles Halloween extravaganza, which this year is a little different than previous years because we are for the first time in America bringing my show Celebrity Morgue where we dance through the delicate topic of some of our favorite celebrities whose live were cut short but whose deaths are so very very unfortunately permanent.
At first I thought the show was a little too... you know, we’re in a political time in America where things are pretty dark, and I like my shows to be an hour and a half of escapism. But I can even find funny in the deaths of some of our favorite celebrities, and it’s really hard too because as a songwriter and a record producer my music comes naturally to me, but we’re taking on people like Prince and Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin who are powerhouse vocalists, that is me taking a pretty big risk trying to attempt this music. But opening night was last night and it was as usual a smashing success.
Of course it is, I expect nothing less.
It’s the great thing about being a crossdresser, the margin of error is much wider when you throw a lace front wig and a pair of 301 eyelashes on.
In case you haven’t figured it out Sharon Needles likes to undersell herself, which kills me because she’s one of the great innovators in contemporary pop culture, not just drag. I had this wild incredible moment of revelation watching the 666 video, and I don’t even know if it’s intentional but it feels like you are holding it down for bygone queer culture. As I was watching the video, and you know, it’s got all the Sharon Needles emblematic ghoul imagery, the goth imagery, I felt like I was being revisited by my own queer youth and by a generation that kids don’t understand. I was watching it from the very opening, with you and Willam swapping a poppers bottle, which was insane...
Miss Mary Flick I have to tell you the truth, those were real poppers.
I could tell from Willam's face!
And we did about 20 takes of that shot to the point where I said, you’re gonna have to just call this quits. Because for your listeners. I don’t know if they’ve ever done poppers, but you primarily don’t do them for about an hour and a half straight.
Not if you want to hold on to your brain cells.
It’s true, immediately after an hour and a half I was like, I’m completely mentally rutarded and we have to just say it’s in the can.
But I mean are you, am I just projecting a fantasy onto you?
Miss Mary, this is the thing, it’s that you have found something that was already inside of you that needed to be revisited. My videos, I go so over the top with nostalgia and re-visiting my pop culture, like if you saw Battle Axe we revisit Dynasty and Bette Midler in Big Business, or on Dracula we have Count Chocula and Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and I’m always re-visiting things that inspired me as a kid, but in this video I intentionally try to make the bad Ru Girl video, which is you use other Ru Girls, you use muscle boys, you use online influencers such as JC from Big Brother or Glamorous Monique from Botched, and you chop and edit this thing down to a tabouli salad. And it’s so fun for you to find something so meaningful in a video that I for the first time in my career intentionally tried to make so meaningless.
I mean, with lines like “touching up my lipstick with my Kylie lip kit” - I have never seen a Kylie Jenner lipstick a day in my life, and the song is based off of Britney’s 123 which I think is the most mindless pop song ever written, so this was an intentional satanic mindless moment, I’m so glad you found something beautiful in it.
In fact the only reference I would say that’s in it is the reason I am painted blue, it was a nod to the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. so anytime I can make a nod to sub pop culture that I know that young queers are not identifying with, I always take that chance because when queers are cool they’re more powerful and I think we’re in a zone when… I mean face it, Kim Petras is trying to steal my job right now - so if I can remind kids about you know, how punk we used to be, that makes them smarter, that makes them cooler, that makes us stronger.
See, I believe you but I don’t believe you.
I’m a compulsive liar, Miss Mary Flick.
No, because you’re smarter than you want people to know you are.
I’m an idiot, the only thing I have more than you is a chromosome.
You’re not, but here’s the thing - you and I know each other… I mean, you and I don't know each other deep deep, but we know each other a bit.
You and I had had sex once!
In my mind, at least. A couple of times. It was good too.
Thank you!
You’re very bendy.
Uh yeah, they call me noodle for a reason.
I thought more like a Stretch Armstrong.
It was completely consensual too, which is not only sexy but necessary.
Exactly. But because I also felt like I was watching a #RIP for the show that sent you into the stratosphere. Cos you’re still sitting there going, Sharon Needles - Sharon Needles was the season 4 winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Sharon Needles is also the winner of Drag Race that began the show’s evolution from this sort of like underground logo thing into a mainstream pop culture phenomenon. The season that Sharon won was the season that people still regard as being the most important season, and there’s all kinds of mythology about who the folks at Absolut wanted to be the winner of your season vs. who Ru and the producers wanted to be the winner, all kinds of stuff, but I mean the show has become something different than it was back when you were on it. And I'm not dissing the show, I love the show and I still love the show, but it’s a different thing now and it’s not really about the cool queer culture. It’s about cash grab.
Well I mean the thing’s been on for 10 damn years.
And I felt like there was a little bit of a #RIP to the OG girls.
Well, I hear what you’re saying a lot, that season 4 for many viewers is actually their season one, and I can’t take all the credit for it. It was a magical cast - I mean, we’ve never seen an older queen with silicone injections before like Chad Michaels, we’ve never seen a previously incarcerated black Divine impersonator like Latrice, we’ve never seen a little person that was so fishy from Puerto Rico like Kenya Michaels, we’ve never seen such a combative tirade like Phi Phi O'Hara, and they certainly never saw anyone like me. And I think when that came together, what we did collectively was we took a beauty pageant and we turned it into an art gallery. And I think that was very important for audiences to see in the world of drag - that this isn’t a visual vernacular, that this is actually a story of art and the heart.
Yeah.
Shit, that was good!
That was really good.
And I woke up 17 minutes ago!
An evidence that I am right, she’s smarter than she lets you think she is. I just helped you out yourself as a deep thinker.
Thank you, oh my gosh. I’m as shallow as a kiddy pool.
That’s not even true, but anyway. Let’s get in. How do you feel about the current state of your industry? Because it had changed quite a bit in the last few years.
Of course, there’s the pageant answer and then there’s how I really feel. I guess when it boils down to it, the responsibility held on drag queens in pop culture to be decent people is where I have the issue, you know. Across the entire gamut of of the entertainment industry people are held to a standard to be very politically correct and say the right thing and you know, we’ve seen so many of our favorite stars lose their careers over a simple tweet or a simple statement, and drag queens are the same.
I’ve watched the fans of drag queens go from queers who understood them to now being fans across-the-board that don’t understand where drag queens have come from, and of course RuPaul has showed the world that we have Chrisma Uniqueness Nerve and Talent, but the show forgets to remind audiences that we’re also coke snorting shoplifting alcoholic cock obsessed boyfriend stealing assholes, and that’s kind of the hard part for me - seeing the shock and awe of fans when we push the PC barriers. Because that’s what we always were, we’re not women, we are a fun house mirror reflection of the over exaggeration concept of the western applied sense of femininity forced onto women. We are monsters, we’re exaggerations, we’re clowns, we’re cartoons. And I guess the hardest part is watching people take us too damn seriously.
When you look around and see some of what has to be done in order to survive, and some of what you have to do to survive is play to 13 year old girls.
Oh, you’ve no idea.
How does that sit with you? Because what you’re talking about is something a 13 year old doesn’t understand yet.
Do I wanna perform in front of a junior high every single night? No. But I will tell you - sometimes these 13-year-old girls get it a little bit more than an adult audience that is terrified of this new... you know, we live in a world where we hold shock artists to a certain standard while we have a pussy grabber in the white house. This has gone topsy turvy. Do I wanna perform in front of 13-year-old girls every night? You know what, they’re paying my bills so I really appreciate them for that and I appreciate that young people are getting involved in this, and the great thing about a 13 year old girl is that she’s going to be alive longer than a normal fan - so I can continue to take her money and she’s going to start making more money later and the older she gets the easier it is for her to steal money out of her mom’s purse.
But sometimes when I hold myself back artistically for fans, such as like my song Cocaine and Fuck which is on my new album Battle Axe, I thought what is my 13-year-old niece gonna think of this, and then I have to put myself back in my 13-year-old shoes when I was staying up till three in the morning and watching Rhonda Shear on USA up all night, or looking at my dad’s Playboys in the cedar chest. When I was 13 I loved kidding myself into a sense of adulthood and adulthood for me was always very sinful, it was always sneaking mom’s cigarettes, stealing the Buick at 3 in the morning, watching porn, so now that I’m older of course I look at a 13 year old girl as like some hormonal crazy fan that smells like funions, but at the end of the day I have to remember who I was at 13 and 13 year olds are smarter than we remember, Miss Mary Flick.
You might be right. You could be right.
Try and remember you at 13, you were a little pervert.
Yes, as a matter of fact you’re right and as a 13 year old I probably would have listened to Cocaine and Fuck before I listened to Andy Warhol is Dead.
Yeah, cos it was dangerous!
Cos it was dangerous, cos I would get in trouble for listening to it. And I would be more attracted to that.
That's right, I'm more GG Allin than Gigi Gorgeous.
So how did you feel the night RuPaul's Drag Race won the Emmy?
The real answer? I guess I was kind of numb.
It’s the house you helped build.
I put maybe a few bricks.
You put more than a few bricks, you helped build the house.
That’s very kind of you to say, and I do believe that any queen who’s walked into the pink workroom owns a little piece of that statue.
I agree. But before you answer, I just want to validate why I believe that, so that you’ll go along with me. There are a lot of people who thought it was down between you and Chad, the season of your run, season 4. If they had gone with Chad the show would be off the air right now. Because the show would’ve been a pretty girl pageant, and not a statement on culture and queer people. In choosing you, they chose the future. It was a wise bet that the show would have legs to prove you out as being a smart choice. That’s why I say you helped build the house. Because I love me some Chad Michaels...
Oh, me too. And if she would’ve won I would’ve understood it, respected it...
I love that bitch. I love her. But it would’ve been a shortsighted decision in that moment.
Well, Chad is also very... She limits what she wants to stick her toes in.
Well, she’s an impersonator. She also does not like to talk.
Right. And when RuPaul told me “Sharon Needles, you better work!” I took that so seriously. I was the first queen to have a full record, I was the first queen to do major theater, first queen to do full around the globe tours, and if I did anything I set a precedent of how hard you can work and how much benefits you can reap from that.
And how much money you can make.
And how much motherfucking money you can make, shit. God, I miss that money. If I was smart I would’ve stayed with Alaska, get half of her money.
I think you’re doing pretty well with this one. He’s a cutie.
Yeah yeah yeah, well you know, we’re not gonna talk about that. The last time I talked about a relationship publicly we saw where that went. But thank you for saying that I did a little bit of brick and mortar work.
So how did you really feel the night the show won?
Well, I don’t watch award shows so I didn’t watch it. Cos they’re boring. I saw it on my Facebook, but the thing I thought about it was more fascinating is the fact that you know most shows are applauded when they premier, you know like Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad, they’re immediately sweeping awards - and this show took a decade to ring the bell of the Academy and to be considered for something, and in fact I don’t know if there’s any other show in history that took a fucking decade to get the recognition that it probably deserved.
My next question is how would you do if you were on season 11.
Terribly.
I hate to say, I agree.
The show itself is it’s own drag queen, each season is almost an impersonation of another. Like, on my season I was known as like this freaky never before seen enigma that now would read as very middle of the road visually bland. The show and the queens are always outdoing each other in this visual game. Would my tongue and my heart and my head still be as strong? Absolutely. Because you know, your visuals are only 50% of the game. But I don't think I would do as well, I think I was in the right space at the right time, and I’m not a religious person and I don’t really believe in the mathematics of the universe and things coming together - but if there was... I say this a lot. Stranger things have not happened than my time on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 4.
The reason why I don’t think you would’ve done well is because you were so…
I’m too old.
No. You’re so unfiltered and I think that the queens have become very adept at producing themselves.
Right.
And a fight like the one that we saw with you and Phi Phi, or just really the way you you were, there was an honesty in your presence on the show that would freak people out in a way that I don’t know if they could’ve handled.
Yeah, and I wouldn’t give myself that credit, I’d give that unfortunate editing of the queens credit to Phi Phi O’Hara. It’s not that queens weren’t entertained by the explosiveness of Phi Phi, they were terrified of what happened to her after the show, and no one wanted that to happen to them. And the unfortunate thing is Phi Phi O'Hara, the most legendary villain in over 100 queens that have walked through that workroom, still deals with the public negative perception of her, which is pretty sad. And it also makes my mind think, did America love me or did they just hate her? Like, cos she assisted in me getting that crown more than anyone else.
No, they loved you. They hated her, but the world loves a villain.
But now the fans have been invited into the topic of our world, and Phi Phi O’hara is not paid enough to receive the hate that she gets.
This is very true. If you were invited to do an All-Stars, would you do it?
Absolutely. And I used to say I wouldn’t, right after the show when I was, you know, I mean I’m not bragging but I was kind of the biggest queen in the world there for a minute. In no way did I want to tamper or assault my legacy of the episodes I did on season 4, but now there’s so many of us that have proven so many great things that I think it would be a really fun experiment to see this many ego maniacs fight for that crown again. Because we don’t have the fire in us like someone who has lost, you know, we’ve already won. And that drains a lot of your determination to win, so it would be a very interesting game. I think World of Wonder have been interested in it for years, but I think it’s Bianca that continues to…
Bianca keeps saying no. The last time I saw her she was like, never will it happen. But I think that the Bebe inclusion on All Stars 3 opens the door for them to just say well, let's bring back another winner and see how it can stir the pot.
Well yeah, and it’s RuPaul’s Drag Race - there’s no rules. We kept thinking there was some kind of formula, but you’re going to see in the upcoming All Stars that the way they cast this show isn’t what most fans would consider fair, it’s for entertainment value and you are all in for a treat.
Well what would you like to tell us, darling?
Absolutely nothing because I signed contracts. If you would like to meet me at Flaming Saddles later on tonight, say around 11:00, we’ll have a couple fireballs and coronas I’ll tell you everything there is to know Miss Mary Flick.
Be careful, I might take you up on that one.
Okay, why do you do really what you do? What’s the burn?
I have absolute… Well, I can tell you, it’s.... I have to think why did I do it before it paid me money. That’s what I always try to remind myself is, why was I in the clubs every Friday, Saturday, Monday for almost 14 years for an unpaid hobby? It boils down to it, it’s not that I wanted to do it but something inside me that was, it was such a necessity - it just had to happen. I needed her, I needed Sharon, and I still need her. I don’t know what it is, and there are queens that are the same in and out of drag, and I am not that queen. Sharon is literally a completely different person, and she gets me in trouble all the time but I love her.
But Sharon is way more confident than you are.
I think that’s exactly what she is, you know, growing up in the small town of Newton, Iowa and being muted for being creative and being different, but still just such an innocent… My innocence was completely ruined by the fact that when I was at my most tender moments it was just complete abuse by every corner of my environment. And I think Sharon is the punishment to all of them.
But Sharon’s not angry.
No, Sharon’s an idiot!
I mean, Sharon might be one of the most loving queens I’ve ever met.
Maybe!
Oh I would... Listen, I’ve met them all. I really have met them all, and I even met queens who’ve never been on… I mean the world, I’m not trying to talk about RuPaul’s Drag Race.
If you ever meet a queen whose persona is kind of cutthroat and mean, in real life they’re usually kind of shy. And I’m not really a shy person, I mean I wanted to make Sharon kind of the anti-attitude of a queen. She’s not sassy, she’s the butt of all her own jokes. She’s based on the power of an 80's idiot, she’s a bimbo. She’s Peggy Bundy, she’s Rhonda Shear, she’s Elvira, she doesn’t walk with a strong strut - she walks with a drunken wiggle, you know. Those are the women that inspired me growing up, so.
But she also seems to kind of reflect the healing of Aaron in some ways.
Should I lay on your chaise lounge right now?
Please do, make yourself comfortable darling, the poppers are right there.
Thank you.
But I mean, she does. Cos you know, I’m oddly obsessed with your work in case you never knew that, and I look at her and having had the chance to talk with you, she is you but she is you all fixed up.
Right. Well, you know, if my brain was the engine Sharon’s just the paint job. She’s a great vehicle for me to take so many things that I’m interested in and package them in a tight little box to share with the world.
So when did all of this turn into art?
I think we’re still waiting on that.
C'mon bitch, don’t try it.
No, I’m… as a performance artist, you can’t really feel your own art - it’s coming out of my pie hole and out of my soul and my head.
So it’s not an attempt, you’re just hoping for the best.
Yes, well kind of. And it’s also just a fluid line of of energy that I share for an hour and a half with an audience, but I don’t... I still struggle with the word, is it art or is it a craft? Because it is ridiculously structured and packaged, but I don’t know. I don’t know. Mary Flick, it’s a hard thing to ask artists.
But I think it’s valid to say that it’s both.
I mean, I’m to the point where every day I check into an airport and at the check-in desk they go “oh, what do you do?”, and I still have trouble answering.
What do you usually say?
Sometimes I say musician, or performance artist. If I’m hungover I’ll say I’m a cross dressing clown just give me my boarding pass and let me go Mary. But yeah, the job of a drag queen is so bizarre, because Madonna is a pop star and Andy Warhol was a painter and we do it all. You know, I produce shows and write albums and dress up and there’s just so many facets to a drag queen - we’ve always kind of been, a drag queen is always kind of the butt of the joke of the gay community, and now I think people are starting to realize that we are everything, we are our own hairstylist, makeup artists, costume designers, writers, joke writers, musicians, actors, models. I mean, as silly and strange as this job seems there’s really not much we can’t do. Other than our taxes.
What is the part of all of this that gives you the most joy?
100% being on stage. I love the stage, it’s the loneliest place in the world. This job suffocates you with humanity. It is either on a plane with 100 people, or in a cab, or in a meet and greet, or on a television set, or in a press line. You’re just constantly surrounded by people, and when you’re on stage you are the only person in the world. It’s the most calming, loneliest place where it’s just you and yourself. And people would probably find this to sound strange, because they would think it would be a scary place and that you’re in a room full of hundreds of thousands of people, but they’re completely gone to me. It’s just an exchange of energy between you, you try and make them laugh, make them think and sometimes try and make them cry. And it’s just the most loneliest best place on earth on stage.
How long does it take for you to get to this kind of self-awareness?
Ummmm well. It probably started when the world started buying my bullshit, because before RuPaul‘s Drag Race I always... I knew I wasn’t fit for that show, and even in my own drag house - the Haus of Haunt - I was always second-tier. I always knew that I wasn’t the one with the best lip syncs or costumes or looks or whatever, I always knew that I was second-tier in this business and I was pretty comfortable with accepting the fact that I wasn’t perfect. But then after Drag Race the world saw something in me that I most absolutely have never seen in myself. You know, the world started looking at me the way Alaska looked at me. As a perfectly flawed artist. And that gave me a lot of confidence to start creating a lot of content that now I’m very very proud of.
What do you hope for next? I’m trying to figure out if you’re a planner or not, that’s the part that’s a mystery to me.
I’m not. At this point Mary I have no idea. I mean I’m three records in, eight world tours, where do we go? And the sad thing is when you’re a D-list celebrity you’re not granted the ability to stop. Like I just read yesterday how Katy Perry is gonna step back from pop music and I said wow it must be really nice, because this industry can forget about you in a second. And I’m not ready to be a queen that makes you feel nostalgic, I’m still very content with being right now. So we’ll see, I think we’re gonna work on a fourth record.
Good.
Disco record, I think. Giorgio Moroder meets Cerrone meets Amanda Lear. Meets Satan.
Of course.
What do you think, would you love a satanic disco record?
I would live for a disco record that captures the danger of the 70's. The sexual danger of the 70's that we didn’t know was there.
Yeah. Post-marijuana pre-AIDS 70's.
Yeah, that very short but incredibly important period. Which takes us full circle, because that’s sort of what I was getting into with the 666 video.
Oh yeah, I would’ve had a hard time in the 70's cos, would I have been in Studio 54 or would I have been in Max's Kansas City? I wouldn’t be able to pick.
When I was a teenager sneaking into clubs I went to both. And that’s what you would’ve done.
Yeah. I couldn’t have been one of those kids who wear the “disco sucks” t-shirt.
No. You know, you would have been a Pyramid queen.
Yeah, cos then you can hang out with the Ramones and you can hang out with the go-go boys.
Yeah. Sharon Needles, I have such deep affection for you. I know, it makes her uncomfortable. Look Chad, look how uncomfortable it makes him.
Due to severe nerve damage I can’t feel anything.
That’s such a lie. It is such a lie. But I do, I have the deepest respect and admiration and affection for you.
You are so kind and I know…
I think you are the absolute greatest and, you know, I feel like I’m in the presence of one of the greats whenever I get to be with you.
You need to get out more.
No, listen, just say thank you! I honestly do, I think you are transcendent and I think you need to believe it more. Your next level relies on you believing it more.
Oh my gosh, that’s a very deep and dark thing to say but maybe something to think about.
I think you need to think about it. Because I have nothing to gain from telling you these things.
That’s right, I’m not paying you.
You’re not paying me and I’m not asking you for anything. But I got what I needed, I got you to talk on the record. You come here willingly anyway.
It’s true, and I know I said it at the top of the hour but I decline a lot of radio because it benefits me none but just sitting and talking to you whether you have one listener or millions it’s always a joy and a pleasure to me. I love you, Mary Flick.
I love you, Sharon Needles.
