In the next couple weeks, Mountain Crest Acquisition Corp is taking Playboy public. The existing ticker MCAC will become PLBY. Special purpose acquisition companies have taken private companies public in recent months with great success. I believe this will be no exception. Notably, Playboy is profitable and has skyrocketing revenue going into a transformational growth phase.
Porn - First and foremost, let's talk about porn. I know what you guys are thinking. “Porno mags are dead. Why would I want to invest in something like that? I can get porn for free online.” Guess what? You are absolutely right. And that’s exactly why Playboy doesn’t do that anymore. That’s right, they eliminated their print division. Gambling - Some of you might recognize the Playboy brand from gambling trips to places like Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Cancun, London or Macau. They’ve been in the gambling biz for decades through their casinos, clubs, and licensed gaming products. They see the writing on the wall. COVID is accelerating the transition to digital, application based GAMBLING. That’s right. What we are doing on Robinhood with risky options is gambling, and the only reason regulators might give a shit anymore is because we are making too much money. Cannabis - If you’ve ever read through a Playboy magazine, you know they’ve had a positive relationship with cannabis for many years. As of September 2020, Playboy has made a major shift into the cannabis space. Too good to be true you say? Check their website. Playboy currently sells a range of CBD products. This is a good sign. Federal hemp products, which these most likely are, can be mailed across state lines and most importantly for a company like Playboy, can operate through a traditional banking institution. CBD products are usually the first step towards the cannabis space for large companies. Playboy didn’t make these products themselves meaning they are working with a processor in the cannabis industry. Another good sign for future expansion. What else do they have for sale? This speaks to their ability to maintain a financially solvent company throughout the transition phase to the aforementioned areas. They’d say some fancy shit like “expanded business model to encompass four key revenue streams: Sexual Wellness, Style & Apparel, Gaming & Lifestyle, and Beauty & Grooming.” I hear “we’re just biding our time with these trinkets until those dollar dollar bill y’all markets are fully up and running.” But the truth is these existing revenue streams are profitable, scalable, and rapidly expanding Playboy’s e-commerce segment around the world.

Ben “The Bridge” Kohn is an interesting guy. He’s the connection between Rizvi Traverse and Playboy. He’s both CEO of Playboy and was previously Managing Partner at Rizvi Traverse. Ben seems to be the voice of the Playboy-Rizvi partnership, which makes sense with Suhail’s privacy concerns. Kohn said this:

These guys are good. They have a proven track record of success across multiple industries. Connections and money run deep with all of these guys. I don’t think they’re in the game to lose.
I was going to write a couple more paragraphs about why you should have a look at this but really the best thing you can do is read this SEC filing from a couple days ago. It explains the situation in far better detail. Specifically, look to page 137 and read through their strategy. Also, look at their ownership percentages and compensation plans including the stock options and their prices. The financials look great, revenue is up 90% Q3, and it looks like a bright future.

I’m hesitant to attach this because his position seems short term, but I’m going to with a warning because he does hit on some good points (two are below his link) and he’s got a sizable position in this thing (500k+ on margin, I think). Current Cultural Significance and Meme Value: A year ago I wouldn’t have included this section but the events from the last several weeks (even going back to tsla) have proven that a company’s ability to meme and/or gain social network popularity can have an effect. Tik-tok, Snapchat, Twitch, Reddit, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter. They all have Playboy stuff on them. Kids in middle and highschool know what Playboy is but will likely never see or touch one of the magazines in person. They’ll have a Playboy hoodie though. Crazy huh? A lot like GME, PLBY would hugely benefit from meme-value stock interest to drive engagement towards their new business model while also building strategic coffers. This interest may not directly and/or significantly move the stock price but can generate significant interest from larger players who will.
Bull Case: The year is 2025. Playboy is now the world leader pleasure brand. They began by offering Playboy licensed gaming products, including gambling products, direct to consumers through existing names. By 2022, demand has skyrocketed and Playboy has designed and released their own gambling platforms. In 2025, they are also a leading cannabis brand in the United States and Canada with proprietary strains and products geared towards sexual wellness. Cannabis was legalized in the US in 2023 when President Biden got glaucoma but had success with cannabis treatment. He personally pushes for cannabis legalization as he steps out of office after his first term. Playboy has also grown their brand in China and India to multi-billion per year markets. The stock goes up from 11ish to 100ish and everyone makes big gains buying somewhere along the way.
Bear Case: The United States does a complete 180 on marijuana and gambling. Lately I've noticed many people on this sub posting content complaining about how their relatively low marks are derailing them from their dream of becoming a doctor. Stuff like "Help! I got a B+, Will I Still Get into Med School???" comes to mind. I understand that being a premed can lead to anxiety when your goals and high academic expectations aren't met. With that being said, I'd like to offer a preventative approach for managing this anxiety. By using "lifehacks", I went from a 3.78 in 1st year, to a 3.92 in 2nd year and finally, a 4.0 in my first half of 3rd year. Anyways, here are all my tips, tricks and secrets I wish I knew in 1st year on how to score a perfect GPA. I will be covering hacks for choosing courses, learning tips, studying tips and lifestyle changes.
**Disclaimer**: These hacks are generally for people who take "memorization courses" like biology. Many of these tips won't apply to "plug and chug" courses like math, physics and some chemistry. Some of these tips may not work for you, but feel free to pick and choose ones that you think would be useful.
How to Choose Courses:

• Take bird courses or courses with profs that actually care about teaching. These are your best friends. If you want a 4.0, it's best to take the path of least resistance since med schools don't care about your major. (Always remember to maintain the requirements for your year, some schools want you to take a majority of 3rd year courses in 3rd year for instance)
• Do not take grizzly bear courses (notoriously difficult classes) or courses with profs that are known to not care about you (ie: making tests impossible for no reason, trying to keep the class average low, unrepresentative content on tests, etc.) If these courses are required for your major, make sure to take bird courses in the same semester to balance it out.
• You can figure out whether a course is easy or hard by using: course reviews, professor reviews (ratemyprof), asking upper years for the syllabus, emailing the prof for the syllabus, asking their grad students who TA the course what their thoughts are etc.
• Enrol in an overloaded amount of courses. Usually, 5 classes per term is considered a full course load. Ask for special permission and get 6 or 7 courses. In the first week of school, get a feel for your classes and drop the worst 1 or 2 before the "drop with penalty" period. This way you're guaranteed to be left with courses you know you can do well in rather than being stuck in grizzly bear courses.

How to Learn (In Person and Virtually)

• Print the lecture powerpoints (2 slides per page double sided). During lecture, physically handwrite annotations on these powerpoints. These will be your notes. Research demonstrates that hand writing leads to better content retention than typing.
• Pay extremely close attention to what the prof is saying and write down anything and everything that you feel is important. This allows your brain to make inferences and gain a deeper understanding of content to help perform better on tests. It also allows you to refer back to lecture content easily when studying. Some profs emphasize what will be tested or outright tell you a question that will be on the midterm/final. Don't be the guy who missed what they said.
• GO TO CLASS, this is a no-brainer. Sit in the front or close to the front and ask questions. Don't be afraid to look like a "tryhard". You'll have the last laugh when you get into med school and the people who made fun of you don't. This also lets you have opportunity to build a relationship with the prof. Maybe you can get into their lab or get a nice reference letter later on.
• Eliminate all distractions during lecture. This means no texting, no tindering, no watching the leafs game and no messing around with your friends during learning time. I remember one class in 2nd year, I used to play Minecraft during lectures with my friend. Needless to say, that was the hardest I've ever had to work for an A- ever. If you actually pay attention in class, studying becomes so much easier. If you aren't mentally in class it's the same as not physically going. You'll have to learn everything right before the midterm/final rather than reviewing. Your grades will reflect this.
• For online learning, if your prof does pre-recorded podcasts instead of zoom calls, pause the video and replay something you want clarified or change the playback speed when you understand something well. This lets you be efficient and time manage properly.
• Consult the textbook to clarify something you don't know or if you want to extend your understanding.

How to Study

• Spaced repetition using ANKI or handwritten flashcards. Aim for a few hours every day. It's important to not just passively read content. You actually have to make an effort to memorize stuff.
• Active recall. Close your notes and try and recite/explain an entire slide. Studying with motivated friends in the same class really helps for this. You can test each other or do quizlets/kahoots together.
• Immerse yourself in content. Find youtube videos relating to your class materials. For human physiology I used to watch crash course to supplement my learning. Volunteer in the profs lab or start researching topics out of interest. For instance, I was really interested in chemical weapons like sarin gas which is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and causes all your muscles to contract at once. I started reading about it on wikipedia, now I can fully describe the events at the neuromuscular junction in detail. Side note: sometimes learning about diseases and enzyme inhibitors can really help solidify your understanding of a physiological pathway.
• Use test banks. If you don't know what these are, they're basically a giant list of multiple choice questions for your textbook. You can sometimes find them by google searching "X textbook testbank" So if I want the human physiology test bank, I'll search "Principles of Human Physiology 8th Ed Test bank". You can spend anywhere between $10-50 for the pdfs to be emailed to you. Any higher prices than that and you're probably being ripped off. These are excellent study and revision resources to use before a test. Some profs even use questions straight out of these test banks on their own tests. Even if they don't, you have an excellent resource on your hands. Always check with your schools academic integrity policy before using this tip. Some may consider it cheating if profs are using the exact same questions on their tests. If test banks are not allowed at your school, play it safe and don't use them.
• Alternatively, you could ask upper years for their tests if they still have them or check your faculty student success office or similar campus resource for old tests/study material.

Lifestyle Changes

• Get 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Non-REM sleep activates long term potentiation pathways in your hippocampus to help consolidate memories. If you study during the day and get a good nights rest, you will retain more information. Basically, you can study for free while you sleep. So take advantage and sleep more!
• Exercise. Weight lift, run, swim, bike, play soccer, play basketball etc. Studies show that exercise makes you more focused and less anxious. You can even turn these into valuable extra-curriculars like intramurals, making your own fitness webpage/blog/instagram, following a fitness challenge etc. Also, you get jacked so you will never have to be afraid of someone kicking your ass which is a bonus.
• Meal prep. I meal prep for the entire month and freeze all my food. If you don't want to go that far, you can start off meal prepping every week. You won't need to spend time every day cooking or blowing money on take-out because you'll have food ready to go all the time. Thus, you can spend more time focusing on school and extra-curriculars. This lets you make healthy, proportioned food choices for lunches and dinners while saving grocery money long term. Follow Canada's Food Guide. I have 50 takeout containers which I fill with 50% vegetables, 25% carbs and 25% meat/fish for the month.
• Spend time with friends/family. Always remember to take breaks from your grind. Take time to spend with loved ones and enjoy yourself once in a while. This past term, I took 1 day off a week to watch The Mandalorian and play poker with my roommates.
• Above all, be mindful of yourself. Each and everyone of you deserves the best, your academic abilities don't define you as a person. We're only human beings, not robots. Sometimes we perform poorly, other times we perform amazingly. There will always be someone better off or worse off than you so theres no point in comparing yourself. Just do the best you can, focus on yourself and your own personal growth and try to help others where possible.

Couple things I wanna get out of the way. First, I know gambling to most people is a money sink. To a small minority of people, we make money on it. To a tiny, tiny minority of us, we do it for a living but those pepople are truly unicorns. Most profitable gamblers are sports bettors who do it as a side hustle - at least in my personal experience. For that reason, I'll try to keep promotion of my lifestyle to a minimum as this is a personal finance page and recommending gambling to anyone as a way of making money is 100% irresponsible. It works for me but it likely won't work for the majority of you.
What do I gamble on - MMA, NFL, NBA and NHL.
When did I start doing this seriously? 2009. I was mostly broke, working a job paying $13/hour, had maybe $2000 to my name plus $3000 spread across various sportsbooks that I built up mostly on MMA betting. Just dropped out of school, was depressed, not from a rich family, didn't know how to get any resources to help me out.
Why gambling? - There is a very quick rollover when you bet on sports. If you invest in stocks, it will take a while for your investment to pay off unless you are one of those short term daytraders. The capital requirements are also higher. With gambling, I can grind out $100 to $1000 fairly quickly. Start with $100, make $10 on the Habs game. Now you have a bankroll of $110. Make $15 on the Leafs game following, now you have $125.
How I work it into personal finance - For most of my life I didn't. I basically just used the various accounts I had on sportsbooks as savings accounts. My job provided me with enough money to pay for living expenses and for fancy toys I'd withdraw funds from sportsbooks. Didn't keep track of anything, didn't felt like I needed to because gambling is not taxed in Canada. The catalyst for me to take care of my finances came in 2016. I was fired from my job and realized I'd spent the last 6-7 years not really building up any professional credentials. Didn't learn to code, don't have a degree (in my mid 30's now). I had built up enough savings to handle the unemployment but I was not a good enough sports bettor to do it full time and the pressure of betting for a living affected my decision making. I spent about two years unemployed before finding my first real job - benefits, pension and everything but I'm well aware of my professional shortcomings and I know I'm not as upwardly mobile as a typical person. I have been very aggressive in contributing to my accounts to make up for it, maxed out my TFSA this year. Currently $9000 into my my RRSP and I still have a ways to go before that is maxed out.
My TFSA is mostly conservative dividend paying ETFs and stocks. I have 10% set aside for speculative stuff. My RRSP is managed by Questtrade and set to maximum aggressiveness. I have a margin account that I very rarely play with, it's just there.
As before, my job covers my expenses and income from sports betting is mostly used to fund emergency savings and contribute to the registered accounts.
Bankroll Management Basically every time I make $3000, I take out two thirds and split that up among my various accounts and let the rest ride. My TFSA is filled so now it's just RRSP and Emergency funds. I've also take a portion of my paycheque every month for RRSPs as well. How long it takes me to make $3000 depends on the year but in an average year it will take about 2-3 months every $3000. Since I withdraw 2/3rds, that's about $8000 a year. At the end of the year if there's extra money, I withdraw all the way down to $3000. 2020 was very, very, very different because of the presidential election. I didn't withdraw at all, my entire year leading up to around October was focused on building up as large of a bankroll as possible to go all in on the presidential elections. 2021 on the other hand has been better than average so far but nothing crazy like 2020. I had a withdrawal $6000 month in Janaury and a $2000 February already so I'm on pace to do really well but you can never be too sure with gambling.
On the spending side. I'm very cheap. Being a sports bettor for most of my life has likely stunted my emotional development - I spend most of my spare time studying sports so I don't have time for the finer things in life. Don't own a car, don't eat at fine restaraunts, don't play video games. I tend to stick to cheaper developing countries travel. The only thing I really splurge on is my computer and my phone - both of which are for sportsbetting reasons.
Landmines - I have two vices: One is Pot Limit Omaha, a 4 card variant of poker that resembles Texas Hold'Em with minor differences (you get 4 cards instead of 2) and blackjack. Blackjack is bad enough that I have to self exclude myself from playing at most sportsbooks, but I do occasionally get the itch. PLO is something that I've worked out of my system over the years. Online poker is very tough nowadays and PLO isn't as fun when you are losing. Those have been the two biggest eaters of my profit over the years.
