Napoleon Overview

So as I told all of you, this is a very rough overview. Certain parts are fleshed out more than others because there are very specific things i wanted to say to my sister so that I did not overlook them. However, the vast majority of it is just bullet points so that I can remember to bring it up. I add the color later during the course of our conversations. So, if any of you read this, and would like to ask specific questions or engage on comments and conversation, let's do it!

A couple of caveats. I am NOT a historian. I didn't even finish college. I just really like to read and talk about history. The vast, vast majority of this is stuff I wrote from memory from what I've read over the 13 years since I first discovered the French Revolution as a topic of interest. A number of these things may be slightly inaccurate, skewed, exaggerated, or even just plain wrong, and I am absolutely fine with that. A number of specifics (like French governments since Napoleons fall) are very general with a question mark next to them because I intended to research that before I deliver my finished product for conversation. I welcome corrections from anyone as that would save me time. This is purely for fun and to get people interested in the topic because of all the interest in what little I've said on the subject so far, I didn't want to wait any longer and massage this rough draft any more.

I've messaged a number of you about my favorite, most readable sources and I will list them here.
There’s four primary books I’ve read or am reading that make up the bulk of the “adventure story” motif, which a galloping writing style that’s hard to put down, posted in the order that I read them.
“The First Total War” by David Bell. This was my introduction to the era back when it came out in 2006.Not about Napoleon specifically, but about the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars as a transformative experience for western civilization. A really fascinating look at the enormous impact on our psychology and history.
“The War of Wars” a sweeping military history of the era, can’t remember the author but should be easy to find. Emphasizes the conflict between England and France and the leaders of both countries as the central theme.
“The Age of Napoleon” J. Christopher Herold. A really fun and readable historical overview of all the main characters of the story, Napoleon at the center.
“Napoleon: a Life” by Andrew Roberts. Probably my favorite. Based on a ton of new scholarship, including 33,00 letters written by Napoleon from the Louvre. Probably the best of the four in terms of uncovering his actual personality, as he was a far more complicated, interesting, and conflicted man than is often portrayed in histories before this time. One of the things all this personal correspondence shows is that he was nowhere near the severe, uncompromising tyrant as was often portrayed. He had a biting, wry sense of humor that can make you laugh out loud.
Happy reading! For a podcast that is still ongoing, I HIGHLY recommend "The Age of Napoleon", which is one of the things that revitalized my interest in the Emperor of the French. I don't really know how to make sure everyone who messaged me actually gets this in their inbox, so I'm open to suggestions. Enjoy and let's talk about Napoleon!

Napoleon Lecture
Part 1: Myth vs Man
The Myth - Who do you think Napoléon is? What impression has survived and evolved over the centuries? How is he understood in American popular culture? This section is purely toyou’re your perspective on who he was as absorbed through his societal impact in art, film, literature, comedy, and folklore. Short, funny hat, stereotypical Frenchman. “Napoleonic complex” meaning one who compensated for insecurity about their height with an outsize personality.
The Man – He actually wasn’t that short, 5’6”, which was average for the age. The hat was the standard generals hat of the military of the era. He wasn’t even “French” by birth, as he was born on Corsica, an Italian island obtained from the Genoan Republic shortly before Napoleon was born. He was nicknamed the “little corporal” early in his career by his men only because he endeared himself by fighting on the frontlines. Often portrayed in British satirical art as small because they viewed him as an upstart ruler without the “dignity” of a “proper king”. There are more books written about him than any human being except Jesus, who had a 2000 year head start and a religion. There are over 220k books in twenty five languages featuring him as the main thesis; three times as many as the days that have passed since he died. So why? Why is this Italian man of average height so famous, or infamous depending on who you ask?
My central thesis is to try and convince you by the end of this conversation that he is the most consequential and transformative person that’s ever lived.
The single greatest statesman conqueror in world history. He fought more battles than Hannibal Barca(26), Alexander the Great(9), and Julius Caesar (24), the three most famous commanders in western history, combined. Unlike any of the other three, he would not have his career cut short by disease, assassination, or political infighting; he would live to go from rags, to riches, to rags, to immortality in his own lifetime. The ultimate product of the tumultuous chaos of the French Revolution, he used the massive conscripted might of the Republic to forge the First French Empire with himself as First Citizen and later The Emperor of the French. He would fight in 64 pitched battles across three continents, going 54-8-2 (a record more like that of a boxer than a general because he fought so often) with most of his losses coming near the end of his career when the walls began closing in, with all of Europe against him and the French people exhausted from two and a half decades of unceasing warfare. (For perspective there were sixty-five pitched battles in the entire American Civil war; the next most prolific commander, Robert E. Lee, fought in 27 battles) a contemporary, the British hero the Duke of Wellington, would say his presence on the battlefield was worth 40,000 men. In every country he conquered, he imposed the Napoleonic Code, a set of laws upon which over fifty countries today still use as the basis of their civil government, stamping the mark of the French Revolution across Europe and permanently undermining and ultimately destroying the monarchal system that had dominated the continent for a thousand years. He changed the face of warfare, and in every human conflict since, officers were trained to fight in the Napoleonic fashion; rather than fighting to obtain leverage in diplomacy to take parcels of territory here and there, conserving the limited war material of the state, and using small armies lead by aristocrats, the objective became absolute and total annihilation of the enemy army and the dissolution of their government, lead by trained professional generals to install a new citizen-lead nation allied to French interests. Many would seek to emulate him, not recognizing that tactics, technology and the times had changed that had allowed him to succeed so brilliantly. All armies had adopted his system of organization and method of deployment, resulting in armies that were equally matched; nation states learned to “take a punch”, and could endure and replace horrific losses that would’ve defeated the states of the medieval style Old Regimes; technology and social conditions eventually evolved so that the tactics of the era were obsolete.
Part 2: An Ancient Land of Kings and the World of 1789 - The monarchs of Europe, The Enlightenment, War in the 18th Century; England, Prussia, Austria, Russia, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Holy Roman Empire, Ottomans, Corsica and the early years of Napoléons life from the island to the academy, and Josephine.
Part 3: The Inferno 1789-1796 - The French Revolution, the fall of the house of Bourbon, the foundation of the French Republic, and The Terror; Levee en Masse, the First Coalition and the beginning of total war; the rapid promotion and ruthless transformation of Napoléon during the Corsican uprising, siege of Toulon and 13 Vandemere.
Part 4: Rising Star 1796 - The Italian Campaign and the end of the First Coalition; he found an army of ragtag, demoralized veterans in a stalemate in the Alps; lacking food and supplies, shivering from no winter clothes and worn out boots; outnumbered three to one he would go on to utterly destroy three Austrian field armies in six months, breaking the stalemate and getting to within sight of the gates of Vienna; introduced the war winning qualities that would make him famous; singlehandedly dictated the terms of the peace without Directorie approval and returned to France a hero; after four centuries of fighting the Hapsburgs for Northern Italy, France was in control; even if he did nothing else, he would still be famous for this campaign; an outline of the genius of Napoleonic warfare; the average Napoleonic army could march 28 miles a day on average, Austrian army was 11 miles
Part 5: Dream of the East 1797-1798 - The Egyptian Expedition; the Ottoman Empire and their relationship with the rulers of Egypt, the Mamelukes; desert warfare; the battle of the Pyramids; he first realizes his destiny; siege of Acre; the return to France; Master of propaganda and the cult of personality of Napoléon
Part 6: The Citizen Soldier 1799-1804- within months of returning to France, he would stage a coup on the 19th of Brumaire, disbanding the Five Hundred and the Directory; establishes the three headed consulate, with himself as First Consul; for all intents and purposes he had now reached the same level of political power and military renown as Caesar (although arguably he had not yet achieved anywhere near Caesars breadth of battle experience). If he had been stabbed by the Directory as Caesar was the senate, as he almost was, this would’ve almost exactly mirrored Caesars career. The crossing of the Alps and checking the Austrians at Marengo; sale of the Louisiana territory, probably the only time he is mentioned in American history class; It’s at this point that he begins the total and complete overhaul of French society into a war machine; philosophically, artistically, industrially, and militarily. The outpouring of art and writing glorifies war as the supreme endeavor of humanity. During this restructuring he gains so much popular support that he usurps even the consulate and coronates himself, ascending to Emperor. At this point in our story, Napoleon was certainly a gifted leader and general, but as successful as his career had been up until this point, there were no indicators of the unprecedented heights he would soon reach. He would be known like Fredrick the Great, Gustavus Adolphus, William the Conqueror, Barbarossa 1st, or Mehmet II, Louis the 14th, George Washington; or Belisarius; or Charlemagne; great but not necessarily unique, drawing comparisons to others; not the world bestriding colossus and all conquering force of nature that he will become, with only Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Genghis Khan above him; by the time it is all over, he would enter the debate as their equal and perhaps even their superiors.
Part 7: The God of War and the Vampire Lord of Europe 1805-1811 - Raising the Marshalls and the composition of the Grande Armee. This army is probably the single most powerful force, pound for pound, that’s ever existed; during the peacetime years of 1801-1805, Napoleon was able to train and drill the army under his own direction and the result was a highly disciplined, fantastically motivated, and totally loyal to the Republican cause ; Trafalgar and the total destruction of the French and Spanish fleets, forever ending his idea of invading the British Isles; The Austrians and Russians at Austerlitz, Prussians at Jena-Auerstedt, Ulm, Elyssau, Friedland, and the Battle of Wagram; the “Glory Years”, when he was absolutely unbeatable and created an unparalleled reputation for victory; even as it was happening, his soldiers, the people of France, and his enemies began to realize that the Emperor had a talent for war like the world had never seen; as victory upon victory began to mount, and the bodies piled up in ever larger and more destructive encounters, the Napoleonic Wars began to take on an irresistible momentum; these were not simply battles, but crushing, overwhelming victories that expanded the French Empire by leaps and bounds, bigger than anything seen in the 1300 years since Imperial Rome; it took the Romans five hundred years to conquer what Napoleon would manage in five; the Peninsular War, “my Spanish ulcer”, term guerilla warfare is coined, marked by irregular fighting and mass atrocities, inspiring the gothic darkness of Goya; the Napoleonic Code; consolidation, a family of kings and queens; marrying a princess and having a son; Napoléon at the peak of his powers. If his conquests had stopped here, the entire continent of Europe would probably still be united with French as the National language. There would have been no world wars (at least not as they happened in our timeline) he would be known as the founder of a new world order, a new era of universal peace and prosperity. This was the most powerful any single human being has ever been. The Emperor who had proclaimed victory at the Treaty of Tilsit and brought all the powers of the old world to heel was triumphant.
Part 8: A Frozen Hell 1812 - Le Grande Armee and the Invasion of Russia. Why invade Russia? By this time, except for the ongoing guerrilla war in Spain, Napoleon was the unchallenged master of the continent. England was the only country that stood against him. Russia, however, did not keep its promise to uphold the Continental Blockade against England, and Napoleon felt he needed to bring the Russians to heel to finally make England capitulate. When the invasion began, the Russians retreated, as the sheer size of the 650,000 man Le Grand Armee made them cautious to engage. Heat, supply problems, typhoid; the enormous army began to suffer even as they never came to grips with the enemy. It was around this time that the emperor began to suffer from dysuria, a condition in which the urine thickens like sand and you can only pee with searing pain, causing crippling swelling and burning in the legs and dizzying fevers; today we would know them as kidney stones. The unprecedented slaughter at the Battle of Borodino. Borodino would remain the single bloodiest day in the history of warfare, with over 70,000 dead and countless more wounded, missing, and captured. The battle itself had all the tactical subtly of a cavemen maniacally swinging a club, as Napoleons enormous army hurled itself at the Russian entrenchments on the redoubt over and over again. The carnage was unspeakable, the smoke blotted out the sun, and by the end of the day both armies were so beaten that they could barely stand. Napoleon, at the rear of the battle line in a hysterical fever, was indecisive and nervous, and would ignore the pleading of his marshals to commit the Imperial Guard. This failure would allow the Russians to escape and despite unprecedented bloodletting and holding the field by the end, the Czar and his army would escape intact to gather new recruits from the heartland and fight another day. Scorched earth and the nightmare retreat from the ruins of Moscow; the hubris of Napoleon. The retreat from Moscow is an indescribable horror. The early onset of winter in October would catch an unprepared French army in the vast steppes and reduce them to pulling half-frozen horses apart and eating it raw with their bare hands, to freezing to death in as they trudged through a desolate gray landscape, to being hacked down by the endless raids by the determined Russian Cossacks. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of the disaster in Russia not only in the Napoleonic Wars, but in world history. The consequences of this campaign are enormously far reaching and inflicted a psychological blow on the whole of the continent from which it would never recover. Thousands of survivors would return to their home countries, irreparably sacred by frostbite, war wounds, and disease, and their story would reverberate quickly throughout the collective memory of mankind. The campaign itself would become a byword for disaster, a monument to needless human suffering on a colossal scale. It introduced the people of the Western world to the full horror of total war and fueled the zeal of the Sixth Coalition to crush Napoleon in an effort to destroy the warlord once and for all, lest his ambition for conquest devour the world. The pitched, absolute battles that will follow will dwarf everything that came before it, as all the combatants suddenly realized that the “giant was spurting blood and was mortally wounded”, and the war of the Sixth Coalition became a fight for survival on both sides as everyone at once realized that the old rules trying to limit warfare were well and truly gone. A new era was beginning and to the people living through it, it was though hell itself had opened a molten fissure in the earth and the Devil was striding amongst men to bring fire and sword to drown the world in blood.
Part 9: Apocalypse 1813-1814 - The invasion of Germany; true total war; outnumbered and besieged on all fronts and his army of veterans shattered, he unbelievably rallies a new army of 500,000; perhaps his most impressive and desperate campaigns with inexperienced but determined troops; Battle of Nations at Leipzig, the largest battle fought in world history with over a million combatants and 150,000 casualties in three days; outnumbered 2-1; his first decisive loss that breaks his reputation as an invincible battlefield commander; retreats into France for the rest of 1813 before the invasion of France; Trachtenberg Plan; multiple battles fought over short time period, each more desperate than the last with dwindling reserves, inflicting numerous and demoralizing defeats in the Coalition; the war-weary allies offer a truce with the pre 1805 borders and Napoleon in his megalomania and delusion refuses; again, if he had stopped here, there is simply no telling how history might have been different as he would have kept his crown and had the chance to rearm and regroup, and possibly make long term peace; the marshals, recognizing that they cannot defeat the coalition, lay down their arms and insist on Napoleons abdication, and he becomes the Exiled Emperor of Elba; the story of every other leader in world history would end here, but not Napoléon Bonaparte
Part 10: The Return of the Emperor and the Final Battle 1815 -
The fever of the Hundred Days and the last stand at Waterloo. If you thought our story was over, in the true fashion of a great adventure novel, I have saved the best for last. To Elba he brought all the same brilliant civil engineering he had enacted on his Empire but events on the continent kept his attention. After ruling over Elba for 9 months, Napoleon could hear the rumblings of Louis the 18th’s failing regime. The population was not happy at his Majesty’s attempts to roll back all the social gains of the revolution and there were numberless newspaper articles, plays, and essays written about how great things were under the First French Empire. Napoleon now launches his greatest gamble yet, the most spectacular moment of his career and perhaps the one thing that will forever separate him from the pantheon of historical leaders. He plots an escape from Elba with his most loyal followers and small band of a thousand soldiers and lands on the southern French coast. He begins marching in broad daylight towards Paris, announcing his intention to retake his crown. Crowds of people gather and cheer him on until the Royalist army approaches and the severely outnumbered Loyalists face the enemy army. Napoleon calmly walks out between the two armies and cries “If any of you will shoot his Emperor, here I am.” The Royalists promptly throw down their weapons and proclaim their loyalty. Marshal Ney, who had promised his king to return with Napoleon in an iron cage, repledges his loyalty to his emperor. Multiple armies will follow suit as his growing following nears Paris. The king flees from the palace in the dead of night and Napoleon is received with adulation at the capital. The word spreads like wildfire that the Emperor has returned and the entire continent is consumed with terror, as all the old romantic cliches - a thundering torrent, an unstoppable force of nature - begins to apply to him once again as he overthrows the reestablished French monarchy without a shot and begins marshaling a new army. So begins the 100 days as the powers of Europe form the 7th coalition and begin converging on the errant Empire. Rewriting a new constitution and reasserting his Imperial authority, the Coalition announces that they declare war not on the French people, but on Napoleon himself. He is an outlaw to be executed. The Emperor marches out to meet them, checks the Prussian army at Ligny and moves toward the final confrontation at Waterloo, where the other most famous general of the Era, The Duke of Wellington, waits with the hardened veterans of the Peninsular War for the final battle.
I want to pause at this point. Think about everything we have talked about from the years of 1796 when he first burst in the scene and 19 years later when he stands here on the brink of destiny. This is the 15th and final round of a grueling global war. There have been bigger battles and better armies, but think of the stakes. There’s never been a battle like this. Everyone going into it knew that they were about to take part in the single most momentous event in all of world history and both armies are aware of the stakes. This is the pivot point upon which the destiny of man revolves. For the British, this is equivalent to the final battle against the dark lord, the last stand of all the free people of the earth against a bloodthirsty tyrant; for the French, it is the last gasp of liberty, the last chance for the light of freedom in Europe and by extension all of mankind. For Napoleon, it is the fulfillment of his destiny and perhaps the most vivid example of his insatiable lust for power; for Arthur Wellesley, surrounded and outnumbered, it is the ultimate test of his ability against the greatest commander to ever live and a grim struggle for survival. The men on both sides are the hard core of what’s left after two and a half decades of intercontinental warfare, fanatical and ready to fight to the death, the final confrontation of centuries of rivalry between their nations. What follows is a desperate struggle in which Napoleon, knowing it’s only a matter of time before the battered but resilient Prussians arrive to reinforce, must throw his entire army into the well-fortified defensive positions, pound them with artillery and hope for a breakthrough. The ensuing carnage in the desperate struggle is legendary. Earth-shattering bombardments followed by a reckless cavalry charge against British infantry squares and bitter hand to hand combat as the balance of the battle swayed back and forth. An entire corps of troops under Marshall Grouchy have been diverted to intercept the Prussians and fails miserably, tramping about in the mud, lost in the countryside while the Prussians under Blucher slip past them. Finally Napoleon would commit the Imperial Guard, and as Marshall Ney charges the slope through withering fire, the bloodbath reaches its frenzied crescendo before the timely arrival of Blücher and the Prussians; the Guard breaks for the first time in its existence and the French are forced to retreat; four days later, he realizes it is truly the end and surrenders his crown for the final time; the end of the Napoleonic Wars
Part 11: Lucifer in Starlight 1815-1821 - the Epilogue of Saint Helena and the legacy of Napoléon Bonaparte. Exiled to the island Fortress, with sheer cliffs 1200 feet high and only one safe port, with a permanent garrison of troops and a 24/7 squadron of British warships circling the island. There is no more isolated island on the planet. Here he would write his memoirs, refight all of his old battles, and eulogize himself so that the idea of who he was would be decided by him. The aspiring novelist who became an Emperor who became an exile before one final convulsion of glory would finally write down his story for posterity. He was the modern Prometheus, the mere mortal who challenged the gods and now paid for his audacity, to spend an eternity chained to a rock in the middle of the ocean. Reporters, dignitaries, famous people from all over the world would come to hold court with him. He would regale them with his many feats and debate what all of it meant to the world he had left behind. After a time, when he had finished his memoirs and could no longer occupy his ravenous mind, the isolation began to rot his mind, his ravings became more superlative and demented, more self-obsessed, more delusions of grandeur, although by now he had cemented his image in the public mind. Eventually the isolation would kill him, either by assassination by arsenic as the conspiracy theory goes, or by stomach cancer which is what probably did the job.
One thing was for certain; by the time he had died at 51 years old in 1821, he had changed the world irrevocably and unleashed the forces of modernity that defined western civilization.
Consequences: the spread of Nationalism created modern unified Germany under Prussia, and Italy, Belgium and Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland; Russia, untouched by the Napoleonic Code, would sink further into absolute autocracy than any country on earth, it’s people virtually enslaved with peasant serfdom with no rights, resulting in the deified leadership of the Romanov Czardom that would trigger the Russian Revolution almost exactly a hundred years later, creating the conditions for the monstrous Joseph Stalin; For centuries the most powerful nation in Europe, France was permanently destabilized and would undergo over twenty (?) different governments between 1789 and today, but would also dramatically expand its overseas colonial possessions during the century of peace that followed the Congress of Vienna; rise of nationalism, identity of race, and class ideology as the primary driving factor in world politics; made military conscription commonplace in all nations; unleashed the potential of “total war” which created the conditions of the First World War; triggered mass migration from Europe to the Americas, 30 million between 1814 and 1914; doubled the size of the US with the sale of the Louisiana Territory; destruction of the Holy Roman Empire; permanently weakened Spain, allowing for the Spanish revolutions in South America and the decisive Spanish American War that would break their overseas holdings forever; created Brazil when the exiled Portuguese monarchy never returned to Europe and declared independence; civil code enforced equality in the law in many nations of today; created the model for administration of the modern nation state; his dream of a unified Europe realized under the EU; his cult of personality and use of propaganda would be the model for every 20th century dictator, as well as his use of secret police for pacifying the population; established England as the unrivaled masters of the ocean for the next century and a half, allowing them conquer And settle India, South Africa, and Australia unchallenged; forced Austria to transition from an ancient collective under a medieval king into an empire administered by an emperor and a modern government, sowing the seeds for the nationalist ideology of what would later become the two dozen modern countries of the Balkans; mortally wounded the Ottoman Empire; sped up industrialization with increased manufacturing capacity for armaments that was then directed towards rebuilding the ruined continent; over five million dead, countless millions wounded, psychologically damaged, displaced, or missing; singlehandedly changed the face of warfare with his strategic aims and tactics and his campaigns are still studied by modern war colleges today; he would be the last and the greatest of the statesman conquerors, as no other head of state would ever march at the head of an army in the vein of Charlemagne or Alexander the Great or Genghis Kahn; his combination of traits as both statesman and warrior would never again be present in one person; established the Louvre, the greatest art museum on the planet, and made Paris the “center of the universe” and the romantic city we know it as today; the champion of enlightenment ideals; the continent now drives on the right side because Napoléon insisted that they switch as a right hander, driving on the left side was a leftover from when horseman’s right arm was their sword arm

Well, promoting wasn’t enough for us, so we decided to create the UBAI, the first online university developing practical courses on blockchain.
Get familiar with Ethereum, its founding principles and major improvements/limitations upon the initial Bitcoin Blockchain!
Did you know that due to the nature of the cryptographic community from which cryptocurrencies have been developed, it is only natural that the adoption of cryptocurrencies in the digital sphere has dwarfed that in the traditional business world? Cryptocurrency adoption has firmly permeated the online gaming sphere with offerings such as Experience points (XP) for purchasing incentives in games and educational content, as well as GameCredits (GAME), which aims to be a universal currency for gamers worldwide and STORM, a kind of Blockchain Mechanical Turk, a crowdsourcing Internet marketplace. In the online gambling space, Funfair (FUN) aims to be the go-to currency for all online gaming, and Edgeless (EDG) supposedly offers a gambling experience with no edge for the house, a project all gamblers would surely welcome and support.
Cryptocurrency projects have already provided use cases for conventional businesses and enabled existing commercial operations to improve their performance with the implementation of Blockchain technology. Thus far, Bitcoin is the cryptocurrency that has most readily made inroads into the public consciousness. Microsoft, for example, has begun to accept Bitcoin payments in Windows and XBox stores, and Expedia has teamed up with Coinbase to allow Bitcoin to be used to book hotel rooms. Much like Iconomy in the crypto asset management sphere, NapoleonX (NPX), is allowing crypto investors to buy into Decentralized autonomous funds which focus on conventional markets. As we have already covered, one of the main reasons that Blockchain technology is causing so much excitement is because of the great number of ways the technology might be developed and applied in business.
The Canadian-Russian boy genius named Vitalik Buterin first envisaged the next stage in Blockchain technology as a scripting language for Bitcoin. But this particular idea failed to reach a consensus with the community. That is what stimulated development of a totally new platform with a more general type of language. Initial development on the Ethereum project began in Spring 2014 with the core team of Vitalik Buterin, Mihai Alisie, Anthony DiIorio, and Charles Hoskinson, working through the Swiss company EthSuisse. Subsequently, the Ethereum Foundation was created in the run up to the July 2014 crowd sale. Then, the Ethereum project’s currency Ether was distributed to participants who purchased the token with Bitcoin.
The initial questions about the security of the project were proven to be warranted after an infamous entity called the DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) led to the loss of $50 million of the $150 million dollars raised in the Ethereum crowdsale. The Ethereum Blockchain then underwent a very contentious hard fork resulting in the Ethereum, ETH, we know today being separated from its parent chain, Ethereum Classic, ETC. By the end of 2016, the Ethereum Blockchain had forked twice more resulting in increased DDoS protection, that de-bloated its Blockchain, and thwarted further spam attacks by hackers.
The true cost of the financial crisis for the world economy is still being calculated and may never actually be known, but conservative estimates put the cost at approximately $20,000 per America citizen. Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of the most famous and infamous digital currency, sought to create a means of transmitting value that did not require a trusted third party to oversee the transaction or guarantee the value. By using distributed ledger technology on the Blockchain he laid the foundation for a trustless decentralized financial system that did not rely on central banks to mediate transactions. This is a “peer-to-peer version of electronic cash…. sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution”. With no trusted third party, each individual becomes a self-sovereign, one-person-bank, responsible for his or her own transactions and security.
The Ether token’s authenticity is guaranteed by its Blockchain, which is a continuously growing list of records connected and secured using cryptography. Like Bitcoin, the Ethereum Network is an open and distributed ledger that records transactions between two people in a confirmable and permanent way. The Ether token is superior to bitcoin in that its blocktime is approximately 15 seconds compared to 10 minutes with Bitcoin. Mining generates new coins at a usually consistent rate, and the average transaction cost in December 2017 was $0.33 compared to $23 for Bitcoin. As alluded to above, Ethereum initially aimed to become both a decentralized internet and a decentralized app store supporting a new kind of app (dapp). In order for the network to function correctly, a novel piece of code “ether” was created in order to pay for the computational power needed to run an application on the Ethereum network. Ether is a digital bearer asset like BTC, and does not need a third party to verify or mediate transactions. “ERC-20 Token: The Ethereum Request for Comment -20 token is standard set of rules used for smart contracts on the Ethereum Blockchain for executing new tokens. It defines a uniform set of rules on how a new token will function within the Ethereum Blockchain. The creation of this token has made it very easy for start-up companies to create their own token within the Ether ecosystem. That was a very significant advancement that caused the 2017 ICO boom in newly issued tokens.
Monero: This fork of Bitcoin is focused on privacy and decentralization. It obfuscates the sender and recipient’s addresses, as well as the amount of the transaction. The original Monero (the name is Esperanto for “coin”) author, Nicolas van Saberhagen, sought to make mining rewards more egalitarian as an additional benefit of being part of the Monero ecosystem. The very private nature of the Monero architecture, which mixes sender “ring signatures” with many others, makes the deciphering of the destination and recipient address increasingly difficult. This has made the Monero cryptocurrency the go-to coin for illicit transactions on the Dark web. There is, however, another way to look at this. Although Monero’s intensely private nature and deliberate obfuscation of transaction destinations and sources is undoubtedly used for criminal and corrupt purposes, the exact opposite effect may occur if its privacy characteristics are placed within the context of third world countries where corruption is already rife. In developing countries, it has proven much easier for people to obtain devices with an internet connection than it is for them to open a bank account. With 2 billion people worldwide without a bank account, much of them in Sub-Saharan Africa, privacy coins like Monero could play a key role in distributing aid to the needy without having to deal with any potentially corrupt and inefficient organizations or state institutions standing in between.
Ripple: Ripple is well-known as one of the very first big Blockchain projects. In fact, its predecessor, RipplePay dates all the way back to 2004. The modern version of the Ripple payment protocol (conceived by Jared McCaleb and built by Arthur Britto and David Schwartz) enables instant peer-to-peer transfer of money. The protocol and the facility to avoid the banking system, results in drastically reduced fees and transaction times compared to international transfers by conventional banking methods. Ripple is currently known as the cryptocurrency of the financial services industry, with major involvement by Santander, American Express and RBS, amongst many others. Ripple has also teamed up with Moneygram to speed up the process of cross-border payments. Ripple is aiming to send money across national lines “as quickly as information” in the words of its CEO Brad Garlinghouse. The almost laughable inefficiencies and delays in sending money to friends or loved ones in foreign countries is a major pain point for banking customers the world over. Now, with the implementation of Blockchain technology through Ripple’s XRapid initiative in partnership with Moneygram, international transfer times will go from being measured in days to being measured in seconds.
NEO: This is often described as the “Chinese Ethereum”. NEO is similar to Ethereum in that it is a Blockchain platform that is designed to be a scalable platform for the construction of decentralized applications. The NEO Blockchain project was founded by Da Hongfei in 2014. Like Ether (ETH) in the Ethereum network, the NEO token is the base asset of the NEO Blockchain. But unlike Ether, it is indivisible, and it accrues a GAS token when stored in a wallet. The GAS token can be used to pay transaction fees on the NEO Blockchain. The NEO cryptocurrency was rebranded from Antshares in 2017, and has started to produce highly successful ICOs on its platform, most notably Ontology (ONT) and RPX which will make use of the NEP-5 token. In the immediate aftermath of rebrand from Antshares, the all-encompassing vision of NEO 2.0 was laid out as follows: “We hope the platform can be used for different front-end scenarios, such as the Digital asset wallet, Forum, Voting, Profile management and Mobile applications. The platform also features an open API that can be used for integration with other systems.” One of the main alterations made to the NEO project was the addition of more up-to-date digital identity management protocols which employed Public Key Infrastructure(PKI)X.509 digital identity standards. NEO’s verification of identity when issuing digital identities includes fingerprint, voice and facial feature authentication methods.
IOTA’s code architecture is not in the same mold of Bitcoin or Ethereum, both of which could be described as existing on and making use of a Blockchain to order their transaction history. IOTA, and its token, the MIOTA, are embedded in a code structure called “The Tangle” which is a form of Direct Acyclic Graph data architecture. This particular architecture enables the code to function with no fixed block and each transaction carries its own proof of work. These types of transactions are enabled by “storing the most recent transactions in a fast cache, and by using checkpoints such that older transactions cannot be references. Thus, the system can be made as fast as Bitcoin, or faster”. IOTA’s main use case is for the transmission of information and value between Internet of Things enabled devices, in an automated manner. This project is truly one oriented toward the future, when many more IoT devices will be online, and there is a great need for such devices to communicate and transact without any human intervention. One weak point in DAG code architecture is that much less than a 51% attack is sufficient to compromise the network. It would be theoretically possible to bring about double spending on a DAG network with a 34% attack.
TenX (PAY) TenX was founded in 2014 as part of a PayPal incubator program. It sought to bridge the gap between Blockchain assets and everyday commerce, providing an efficient solution for the liquidity problems of many cryptocurrencies. The project will eventually be centered around a debit card that makes use of the COMIT protocol that enables many different Blockchains to interact with one another without having to issue a different token. That could be another milestone event in the crypto ecosystem. The project roadmap presented to investors began with the ICO in July 2017. They famously raised $34 Million in the first 7 minutes. The roadmap will conclude when they obtain their banking license in the middle of 2020. At that point they also aim to issue FIAT tokens fully backed and issued by a government. So far, the TenX project is on course to meet its stated targets. They brought out their highly rated IOS and web apps at the end of 2017. This serves as a fantastic example of how a well-run ICO can help both the investors and the startup streamline the capitalization process to the benefit of all parties involved.
Influence upon Traditional Merchants around the world. Due to the inherent volatility of cryptocurrency, the adoption of crypto payment methods by traditional businesses has generally been slower than in the online sphere. Although some major companies have in fact begun to come around to the idea of integrating digital currencies into their methods of accepting payments, the volatility of crypto is still a serious impediment for most. Microsoft has led the way by incorporating Bitcoin payment systems into the Window Store, as well as adding the ability for game players to purchase credit on the Xbox live network with Bitcoin. Overstock began accepting Bitcoin payments on January 9th, 2014, and saw a significant uptick in orders immediately. They received 900 new orders for $126,000 worth of BTC. Electronic retailer NewEgg, and online gaming site Zynga, also now take Bitcoin payments. There are even certain Subway outlets in South America that have started to accept Bitcoin as a method of payment too. On a far smaller scale, Coingate has partnered with Prestashop, to take Europe to the verge of a widescale cryptocurrency payment method. Merchants of any size need only apply for a Coingate account, and then have a crypto payment module installed, in order to accept payment in Bitcoin, BCash, Ether, Litecoin and nearly 50 other cryptocurrencies. The price is locked in immediately at the time of the transaction, which solves the volatility issue, and the whole process can be completed without the merchant having to deal in anything other than Euros. CryptoCredit card projects Monaco and TenX help to bridge the gap between the worlds of fiat and crypto, allowing a card holder to spend their cryptocurrency anywhere in the world.
Decentralization & Our Financial World In the Financial World, decentralization would radically alter the roles of, and creation of value by, our modern day ‘too-big-to-fail’ financial institutions. The capping of the supply of most major cryptocurrencies is itself an idea nothing short of revolutionary, in the truest sense of the word. All developed economies are oriented around a Central Bank that, through the system of fractional reserve banking, has power to create loans or investments and accept deposits, but is only required to hold reserves equal to 10% of its total liabilities. This in effect empowers central banks to print money as they see fit, a mechanism which gives central banks massive power in contemporary society. Any move toward decentralized ledgers, and any number of finite decentralized currencies, would upset the balance of power between central banks and the individual in a way that has never occurred before. The role of central banks in the economy, and the traditional means of solving common financial problems by having the central bank manipulate the money supply, for example, would need to be radically rethought. Consider the recently used machinations such as quantitative easing, negative interest rates, etc. These are present-day “solutions” that would no longer be able to be applied to the economic and financial problems they are attempting to solve.
If Blockchain technology was meaningfully deployed in the political arena it is conceivable that political corruption and vote-rigging could be severely curtailed or even eradicated. By providing a clear, transparent and incorruptible method of vote recording and counting, voter fraud and election rigging could be eliminated. The political climate could be detoxified and faith could be restored in both fledgling and established democracies. The idea of being able to present a publicly available digital ledger would allow journalists to maintain lists of sources that would be able to be shared between peers without compromising the source’s identity. The possibilities for the application of the Blockchain founding principles are truly revolutionary and just may be the largest leap forward for society since the computerization of the work force or the globalization of trade. The Cryptocurrency Ecosystem Overstock is a large e-commerce company that has successfully adopted a Blockchain solution for its business needs. The Silk Road was one of the most widely known early beneficiaries of the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies. Purpose of Cryptocurrencies -Ethereum was developed after the original creator’s suggested changes to Bitcoin were not implemented by the community. -Ethereum is a completely separate cryptocurrency. -DAO Hack & the Ether Token. -Monero, Ripple, NEO, Stellar & Iota. -Microsoft has begun to accept Bitcoin on the Xbox live network store.

This would allow traditional assets to be easily integrated with smart contracts, and facilitate their interaction. This would cut down transaction times, and even more importantly, dramatically slash legal fees to a fraction of what they are today. It can cost up to $1,000 an hour or more to hire corporate lawyers to preside over a deal, draft contracts, or give advice on the intricacies of high finance. So, the potential savings involved for big businesses, if smart contracts and asset tokenization became the norm, is an amazing thing to think about at this time.
